ASIS International Retreat Identifies Good Governance as Key to Mitigating Insecurity

Experts and practitioners at the recent leadership retreat, organised by ASIS International Chapter 206 Lagos in Abeokuta, Ogun State, emphasised that good governance is crucial for addressing Nigeria’s insecurity issues.

The 2024 Leadership Retreat facilitated networking, focused learning, camaraderie, and knowledge sharing among its members.

The event, themed ‘Hard & Soft Security: Addressing Threats with Focus on Human and National Development in Nigeria’ was attended by industry leaders, seasoned professionals, and key policymakers, aiming to develop effective security strategies for national stability.

In his keynote address, General Lucky Irabor (rtd), the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, called for a new approach to tackling insecurity.

“We must review our security strategies to adopt a human security perspective. Good governance must be integrated into managing security. Physical security, which has garnered most attention, is only a part of the issue. The root causes of physical insecurity, which are linked to governance, awareness, national orientation, and education, need to be addressed,” he stated.

The Chairperson of ASIS International Lagos Chapter 206, Mrs. Joko Olanitori, stressed that beyond heavy national spending on physical security, addressing hunger and infrastructural deficits is essential.

“If we ensure food security and improve infrastructure, the challenges of physical security will be easier to manage,” she noted.

Guest Speaker, Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire (SAN), counseled that the various private security sector bodies in the country should unite under one umbrella organisation to present a common front capable of working with the nation’s legislative body to resolve operational issues.

The Retreat featured breakout sessions, health talks, golfing, and other games, as well as visits to the famous Olumo Rock in Abeokuta.
