As the world marks the 2024 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the National Association of Seadogs (Pyrates Confraternity), Sahara Deck (Abuja City Centre), has reaffirmed its commitment to battling the scourge of drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
In a statement signed by the Capoon of Sahara Deck, Mr. Olamide Oni, yesterday highlighted the devastating impact of drug abuse, which has shattered lives and families both in Nigeria and globally. Mr. Oni emphasized that countless young individuals with bright futures have been lost to the ravages of drug addiction.
In response to this crisis, the association is collaborating with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to heighten awareness of the dangers posed by drug abuse and illicit trafficking. A key component of their initiative includes an undercover documentary produced in Abuja, which aims to expose hotspots of illicit drug activities.
Aligning with the 2024 theme, “The Evidence is Clear; Invest in Prevention,” the association’s campaign is focused on youth education. Oni stressed the importance of early exposure to the dangers of drug abuse, which is crucial in preventing young people from falling prey to this harmful habit. The association is partnering with secondary schools to educate students about these risks, believing that informed young minds are less likely to engage in drug use.
Oni called on governments at all levels to incorporate drug awareness campaigns into the curricula of secondary schools nationwide. This move, he said, is essential for safeguarding the future of Nigerian youth. He pointed out that peer pressure and lack of awareness are significant factors driving young people toward drug abuse, and a preventive approach through education is vital.
Furthermore, the association called for stringent measures against illicit drug traffickers. Oni urged the government to enact and enforce severe penalties for those involved in the drug trade, suggesting that publicizing such penalties could serve as a strong deterrent.
The National Association of Seadogs also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report any instances of drug abuse and illicit trafficking to the NDLEA. Oni concluded by stating that combating this issue requires a collective effort to create a safer society where young people can thrive and realize their potential.
