Mimiko’s Massive Support for Aiyedatiwa

In politics, alliances shape electoral outcomes and strategic manoeuvres. Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State understands this well, having forged a surprising alliance with former governor Olusegun Mimiko ahead of the state’s forthcoming gubernatorial election. As tensions heighten across Ondo in anticipation of the November election, political alignments are being closely scrutinised, none more so than Aiyedatiwa’s alliance with Mimiko.

The alliance between Aiyedatiwa and Mimiko is particularly noteworthy because their parties are different. Aiyedatiwa is the All Progressives Congress (APC), but Mimiko is historically aligned with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This cross-party collaboration has raised eyebrows and sparked discussions about its implications.

Responses to this alliance have been mixed. While some view it as a strategic move to consolidate political power and broaden electoral appeal, others within the APC and opposing parties perceive it as a threat to party cohesion and electoral strategy. The alignment is further complicated by the emergence of Abbas, the younger brother of former Governor Mimiko, as the candidate for the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

The mistrust surrounding Aiyedatiwa’s alliance with Mimiko stems from concerns over its long-term implications and the perceived influence of Mimiko in Aiyedatiwa’s governance decisions. Critics argue that Mimiko’s support could undermine Aiyedatiwa’s credibility within the APC and reduce his ability to unite the party ahead of the election.

Despite these challenges, Aiyedatiwa’s gubernatorial prospects remain fluid. In fact, as the election approaches, Aiyedatiwa seems to be using his alliance with Mimiko to identify and remove political thorns that could negatively affect his success at the polls.

By every indication, Aiyedatiwa’s collaboration with Mimiko is a calculated effort to bolster his candidacy. But it is also under strong scrutiny within his party. Depending on how much Aiyedatiwa values his gubernatorial ambition, he may have to step on more toes as he attempts to walk further on his political course.
