Abdulfatah Ahmed Eyes Senatorial Seat in Kwara?

“A man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s heaven for?” These words by Robert Browning seem to resonate with Abdulfatah Ahmed, the former governor of Kwara State, who is rumoured to be eyeing a senatorial seat in Kwara. Ahmed, who has previously served as governor, is reportedly seeking new political heights as a way to continue his political legacy.

From some quarters, it is heard that Ahmed is intent on becoming a senator. His aspirations suggest a strategic move to reinforce his influence in Kwara’s political landscape and continue playing a significant role in the state’s governance.

Though the rumours have not been confirmed, they carry a ring of plausibility. Power is a difficult thing to relinquish, especially for someone who has held significant political office. For Ahmed, a return to the senatorial scene would provide an opportunity to leverage his experience and maintain his political relevance.

This is not Ahmed’s first attempt at a senatorial bid. Back in 2018, he sought a senatorial seat but withdrew from the senatorial race in the 2019 general elections. With such a history, the man has always possessed a complex political profile.

Meanwhile, it was while Ahmed was governor (between 2011 and 2019) that he really showcased the depth of his ambitions, although positively. His tenure as governor allowed him to implement significant programs and policies aimed at improving Kwara State’s infrastructure and social welfare, which helped him win the position a second time.

After leaving office in 2019, Ahmed kept a low profile. This stance was further solidified by the scrutiny of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), alleging that he diverted funds during his tenure. This cast a shadow over his post-governorship period, leading him to adopt a more cautious public persona.

Now that the EFCC case appears to be behind him, Ahmed might feel a renewed sense of purpose. With this potential return to the political arena, he might be ready to reassert his influence and continue his political journey. Observers will undoubtedly watch closely to see what unfolds and what lessons emerge from Ahmed’s persistent reach for new heights.
