Student Unions Opt Out of Planned Nationwide Protest, Say Motive Unknown

Northern youths and students’ unions have announced the withdrawal of their members across Northern states, from the planned nationwide protest over economic hardship in the country.

The group leader, Jibril Bello, who addressed press conference in Kano, yesterday, directed all their members not to participate in the mass actions scheduled to begin from the end of this month.

“Following our just concluded general meeting, we have reached the decision to call on students to withdraw from the planned nationwide protest. This has become necessary because we cannot reach out to the organisers or understand the real motive behind that.

“We accept the fact that there is hardship in the country, yes it is true, but two wrongs cannot make a right. That we cannot find those behind the protest and cannot understand why they are planning it.

“We appreciate the government of President Bola Tinubu for providing interest free students loan to support education in the country,” he stated.

He, however, urged the Nigerian government to invest more on local scholarships than foreign scholarships in order to make students academic journeys easier and affordable.
