In an urgent plea for calm, a group under the umbrella of Rebuild Arewa Initiative for Development (R.A.I.D) has called on Nigerians to avoid protests and instead engage in peaceful, intellectual approaches to address the nation’s pressing issues.

The call was made by the President of R.A.I.D, Balarabe Rufai, yesterday in Abuja following a unanimous agreement reached during a comprehensive engagement with over 50 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).

R.A.I.D emphasized that while mass protests are a constitutional right and essential for holding leaders accountable, they often lead to violence and negative outcomes, particularly in Africa.

Rufai highlighted past instances of protests turning violent, including the uprisings in Libya, Sudan, Kenya, and the recent #EndSARS protests in Nigeria, which have left lasting adverse effects on these nations.

He said, “ Nigeria faces numerous challenges including security issues, economic instability, social problems, and political corruption. Recognizing these, R.A.I.D proposed several demands and solutions to address these challenges.

“ We called for a multi-dimensional committee on security issues, better welfare for security personnel, technological innovations to combat insurgency, and the revitalization of critical infrastructure projects like the Mambila power project and the dredging of the River Niger and Benue.

“ Formation of a multi-dimensional committee, improved welfare for security personnel, and deployment of technological innovations against insurgency. Re-activation of all refineries by the end of 2024, speedy completion of the Kolmari and Doma oil fields, and commencement of the Mambilla power project.

“ Infrastructure Prioritization of the River Niger/Benue dredging project and increased funding for agriculture and agro-allied industries. Social Services restoring subsidies on fuel, electricity, and transportation; funding education and healthcare; and ensuring living wages for workers and security operatives.

“ Avoiding Regrets, R.A.I.D warned that the only way to quell national discontent and prevent multifaceted protests is by addressing the root causes of public frustration. This includes restoring subsidies, funding critical social services, and ensuring good governance.”

Rufai further urge the government to commit to these solutions and for citizens, especially the youth, to adopt a peaceful but intellectually driven approach to advocacy, emphasizing that political maturity and responsible actions are crucial for Nigeria’s future.
