Canada Minister Ufodike Highlights Nigerians’ Role in Driving Change in Canada

During Nigeria’s National Diaspora Day and the National Diaspora Merit Award 2024, the Deputy Minister of Trade, Immigration, and Multiculturalism in Alberta, Canada, Dr. Akolisa Ufodike, discussed the significant impact Nigerians have made in fostering economic and political progress in Canada.

Dr. Ufodike delivered his address as the Diaspora Special Guest at the event held over two days at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Themed “Japa Phenomena and its Implications for National Development,” the event was organized by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM). He explored the reasons behind the ‘Japa’ movement, where Nigerians seek better opportunities abroad.

“As someone who shares Nigerian heritage, I understand deeply the aspirations tied to the term ‘Japa.’ It represents the ambitions of numerous Nigerians pursuing dreams abroad,” Ufodike stated. He recounted personal experiences of friends and family who faced both obstacles and successes in their journeys, underscoring the resilience and determination emblematic of Nigerians.

Dr. Ufodike highlighted the positive influence of the Nigerian diaspora in enhancing global cultural exchange, particularly in Alberta. “The Nigerian diaspora has significantly enriched the social, economic, and cultural landscapes wherever they reside. Their contributions span advancements in technology, medicine, business, sports, and the arts, showcasing their resilience, innovation, and dedication to excellence.”

He emphasized the importance of the Nigerian community in Alberta’s development. “In Alberta, the Nigerian community is a key contributor to our province’s progress. As a Nigerian-Canadian, I am proud of the exemplary role our community plays.”

Dr. Ufodike also underscored Alberta’s commitment to inclusivity and respect for diversity. “Alberta is dedicated to fostering a welcoming environment where everyone feels they belong, and where cultural, linguistic, and religious diversity is celebrated.”

To honor the contributions of Nigerians, Alberta has designated October as Nigerian Heritage Month. “Nigerians in Alberta have been instrumental in shaping the province’s future. Recognizing this, Alberta has permanently declared October as Nigerian Heritage Month.”

Dr. Ufodike stressed the potential for Nigerians in the diaspora to contribute to international development and strengthen Nigeria-Canada relations for mutual growth. “By leveraging the skills and experiences of the diaspora, we can enhance development on both sides. Building stronger ties between Nigeria and Canada will yield mutual benefits.”

Looking ahead, Dr. Ufodike called for continued support and unity. “As we move forward, let’s continue to support one another, embracing our shared identity with pride. Together, we can forge connections between nations and create lasting impacts for future generations,” he concluded.
