The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, in collaboration with the non-governmental organization Rebuilding Hope on Wheels Initiative, has called for effective policies to create accessible and inclusive environments for persons with spinal cord injuries in Nigeria.
At the inaugural National Spinal Cord Injury Conference held in Abuja, the founder of Rebuilding Hope on Wheels Initiative, Hajia Amina Audu, emphasized the importance of integrating the abilities and potentials of individuals with spinal cord injuries into all facets of national life. She highlighted the need for a spinal cord trust fund, noting that survivors face significant challenges that hinder their contributions to national development.
“This event marks a crucial step toward fostering an inclusive society where everyone, regardless of physical condition, can thrive and contribute meaningfully to our nation’s development,” said Audu.
Dr. James David Lalu, Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, represented by Professor Soji Adewale, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to improving the lives of persons with disabilities.
The conference, themed “The Place of Persons with Spinal Cord Injuries in Disability-Inclusive Development in Nigeria,” brought together stakeholders, including medical professionals, researchers, and policymakers.
In a pioneering initiative, Rebuilding Hope on Wheels Initiative, led by founder and CEO Hajia Amina Audu, launched the conference, which uniquely organized by spinal cord injury survivors. The event aims to serve as a catalyst for change, encouraging ongoing dialogue, policy shifts, and societal attitude adjustments toward disability.
As the conference progresses, participants are expected to develop actionable strategies and recommendations to guide Nigeria towards a more inclusive future. This event represents a significant step in the nation’s commitment to recognizing and harnessing the potential of all its citizens, regardless of physical limitations.
