Lanre Shonubi: London’s Go-To Maestro for African Music

In the ever-evolving media landscape, Lanre Shonubi stands out as a dynamic force. With a relentless drive for uncovering stories and a natural talent for journalism, Lanre has become a pivotal figure in the realms of information, entertainment, and cultural influence.

His journey from the bustling streets of Lagos to the prestigious halls of the BBC showcases his commitment to excellence and his ability to capture the narratives that resonate deeply with audiences.

Lanre Shonubi isn’t just reporting the news; he’s shaping the cultural conversation. Born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria’s bustling metropolis teeming with stories, Lanre’s upbringing subtly shaped him into a paragon of his generation’s creativity and dynamism.

His journey began at Covenant University, where he honed his skills on the university’s “Hebron FM”. This was just the start, leading him to intern at Lagos’s Inspiration FM, host a YouTube show at Tech City, and engage with HOT FM Lagos. There, he interviewed luminaries of the African music scene, including Tems, Yemi Alade, 6lack, 2Baba, Falz, Major League DJz, and Stonebwoy.

His journey so far is nothing short of inspirational. Currently, Lanre’s expertise in radio production and his sharp ear for exceptional music are being utilized at BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra, one of the world’s most reputable media houses.

Here, he produces content for the breakfast shows, crafting newsworthy questions for top African artists. Lanre also serves on the playlist committee at BBC 1Xtra as an afrobeats specialist, successfully pitching several afrobeats records into the station’s daytime playlist. Tracks like “Gwagalad” by BNXN, “Abracadabra” remix by Rexxie and Wizkid, and “Blood on the Dance Floor” by Odumodu Blvck have all benefited from his advocacy.

In addition to his role at the BBC, Lanre curated the Afrosounds Weekender at 1Xtra, working closely with the music team to create content, schedule music, and organize takeovers. A standout project from this initiative was Afrosounds Future Gen, which spotlighted emerging talents from the continent.

Lanre, alongside Bryan Obono, brought this project to life, featuring artists such as Odumodu Blvck from Nigeria, Ch’cco from South Africa, Boutross from Kenya, and Rhita Nattah. The 30-minute feature, hosted by Remi Burgz and produced by Lanre and Bryan, is available on BBC Sounds. Lanre Shonubi is also a sought-after event host.

He has hosted various festivals in London, including the Palm Wine Music Fest, Joeboy’s Tour, and Grammy-nominated Ayra Starr’s UK tour. His impressive resume also includes The Cavemen Live at Koko Camden, and events for Show DemCamp, Cavemen, BNXN, and Joshua Baraka from Uganda. As a music executive, Lanre, affectionately known as “The Radio God,” co-owns Unknown Digitals., a music service outfit representing uber-talented Yimeeka. He has also contributed significantly at Outer South label company, handling radio promotions, audience development, administration, and sync for artists like Tim Lyre, Suté Iwar, and Ray the Boffin.

Lanre’s dedication to music and the amplification of alternative African sounds have earned him multiple recognitions, including accolades from the Nigerian Teens Choice Awards. His academic achievements are equally impressive; he acquired a Master’s Degree in Media & Radio Production from Birmingham City University, finishing at the top of his class.

Excellence is the driving force behind Lanre Shonubi. As his name ‘Olarenwaju’ implies, wealth—in all its meanings—lies ahead of him. He continues to contribute his quota towards a happier world, using excellence as his vehicle.

Eddie Kadi, a notable figure in the industry, had this to say about Lanre Shonubi: “Not only is Lanre connected to the music that sits as one of the foundations of modern-day African culture globally, he has a good understanding of what is required to keep the culture active. He is passionate about connecting people and taking part in every aspect of the scene. From research to participating on radio, to hosting substantial events, his contribution to every room brings value, and this is only the beginning.”

Lanre Shonubi is more than a media personality; he is a cultural ambassador and a beacon of excellence in the global music scene. As he prepares to go on tour in October with Johnny Drille, following tours with Ayra Starr, Joeboy, and Odumodu Blvck, the world eagerly watches his next moves. Lanre Shonubi is not just riding the wave of African music’s global rise—he is helping to steer the ship.
