The Role of Built Environment Professional in the Civil Service

ESV Ojutalayo Adeola Adisa

This short opinion article examines the roles being played by built environment professionals in the Nigerian civil service. The need for vibrant, productive, and standard civil service calls for efficient and dedicated built environment professionals’ inclusion in the service of the state for physical and housing developments.

These various professionals in the civil service complement one another to achieve their goals as they are all involved in development with different roles to come up with a laudable and commendable outcome.
At the federal, state, and local government levels, they are essential in the overall service delivery of any government project.  Their professional contributions are all geared towards quality assurance, maintaining high standards and best practices.

These professionals include Estate Surveyors and Valuers, Architects, Town Planners, Land Surveyors, and Building Engineers. If properly engaged, these professionals in the built environment can turn things around in the building and housing sectors of the Nigerian environment.
This opinion article is an abridged version of my lecture to students studying estate management and other built environment courses at various tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
