The House of Representatives through its Committee on Healthcare Services has expressed concern over the growing Mpox epidemic currently affecting Nigeria.

Spokesman of the  House, Akin Rotimi, in a statement issued yesterday recalled that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) recently reported a sharp increase in Mpox cases across multiple states.

He said the Centre also stressed the importance of enhanced surveillance, rapid case detection, and immediate isolation of affected individuals.

Rotimi stressed that underscoring the gravity of the situation, the House Committee on Healthcare Services and all health-related committees in the House were intensifying oversight activities.

He added, “We are also working in close collaboration with relevant health agencies and international partners to ensure a coordinated and effective response to the outbreak.”

Rotimi quoted that Chairman of the House Committee on Healthcare Services, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, has expressed his concerns about the outbreak.

According to him, “The rising cases of Mpox in our country are a serious threat to public health. We are fully committed to working with the NCDC, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, and international partners to ensure that we take all necessary actions to curb this epidemic. The safety and well-being of Nigerians is our top priority, and we urge everyone to adhere to the health guidelines provided.”
