Principal photography of the film, ‘Safari’, produced and directed by prolific Nigerian filmmaker, Obi Emelonye has ended after weeks of shooting in Nigeria and Kenya. Starring Osas Ighodaro in the lead, the project showcases the stunning landscapes of both countries, serving as a visual celebration of African beauty.
Ali Nuhu, Anthony Monjaro, and Jidekene Achufusi are among the cast. Emelonye in a post gave update of the feature film, while appreciating sponsors and partners, the cast and crew, as “the world awaits the project”. “It’s a wrap on the ‘Safari’ movie project!” Emelonye shared on social media.
“Last shot at Sarova Whitesands, Mombasa. Many thanks to Providus Bank, Multan Production, Kenya Tourism Board, Kenya Airways, Sarova Hotels & Dusit Princess Hotel Residence. I am grateful to God, cast and crew. The world awaits…#Safarithemovie”
Emelonye’s latest project, ‘Safari’, exemplifies his innovative approach and cross-cultural storytelling. Written by Tunde Babalola, the film tells the story of a senator’s wife seeking solace in the East African country amidst personal and political turmoil.
Emelonye, in a chat with Showbiz, recounts his experience on location, describing it as magic. “Shooting in Kenya was a revelation. Anywhere in Africa will give you quintessential African hospitality. That was what we got in the Gambia where we shot The Mirror Boy (2011). Welcome with opens arms and open hearts.
“However, Kenya has a very structured film industry and we had to find a local agent to start production. We were in luck with that. Multan Productions we worked with became Safari’s trump card. Multan helped to bring to bear an unprecedented level of collaboration.”
Emelonye also stated that the partners’ invaluable logistical and complimentary support eased what would have been a challenging shoot. “Safari cannot be Safari without Kenya and maybe we shall do this again. Such was the magic we have created with ‘Safari’ in Kenya,” he enthused.
The production of Safari benefitted from the recently announced Providus Bank N5 Billion Nollywood Dedicated Fund. An initiative aimed at boosting the country’s creative industry and the global reach of Nigerian cinema, enabling filmmakers to bring their visions to life without the usual financial constraints.
