Lagos Set to Host African Food and Drinks Festival: Garri Day on August 24

The vibrant city of Lagos is gearing up for the African Food and Drinks Festival: Garri Day, scheduled for Saturday, August 24, 2024.

Chief Obani Oluwabiyi Anthony Boyede Greenlyte, founder of Theatre Centrik and organiser of the event, promises a grand celebration of African culture, food, and drinks, with a special focus on the beloved staple, Garri.

In partnership with the Lagos State Tourism Board, the University of Kulture, Alimosho Arts Community Initiatives (AACI), and other esteemed partners, the festival aims to highlight the cultural significance of Garri—a popular staple in African cuisine.

Chief Boyede emphasized that the event seeks to leverage the celebration of Garri to promote cultural heritage and unity among African communities.

“The festival will take place at the University of Kulture, located at 2 Araromi Street, Lasu Ojo Road, Lagos.

“The event promises a day filled with cultural festivities, including a mini Garri competition, captivating dance and drama performances, and various side attractions and exhibitions. Attendees will also have the chance to experience a showcase of achievements from the recent summer fun fest and enjoy the premiere of the cinematic movie “Nku,” created entirely with an iPhone, ” he stated.

“Garri enthusiasts can look forward to a diverse array of Garri from across the continent, featuring: Ijebu Garri: known for its fine texture and sweet taste; Ghanaian Garri: a special blend infused with spices and herbs; Cameroonian Garri: renowned for its crunchy texture and flavorful aroma; and Nigerian Garri: a classic blend of traditional spices and ingredients.

“This festival is not just about food; it’s a celebration of our cultural heritage and unity among African communities,” Chief Boyede noted.

The event will also feature a star-studded lineup, including veteran actors, traditional rulers, culture enthusiasts and key stakeholders from the Lagos State Government and the Ministry of Tourism.
