African Solutions for African Problems’ Our Driving Force” – Khalil Halilu
In a rapidly evolving world, locally relevant solutions that meet global standards are constantly required, to stay ahead of old and new challenges. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, the visionary Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), stands at the forefront of spearheading African-led innovation to tackle African problems.
Halilu believes the key to unlocking Africa’s potential is in harnessing homegrown solutions to address the continent’s pressing issues. “African problems require African solutions. We have the talent, the expertise, and the creativity right here on our continent to drive meaningful change,” he asserts. He has spent the last decade translating this belief into action.
He has played key roles in several companies, significantly contributing to their development and innovation. At Gongoni Company Ltd., a prominent manufacturing firm in Nigeria, he was instrumental in driving the company’s success, although the exact duration of his service remains unclear. His strategic input was also crucial at Nuli Foods Company, a brand focused on healthy eating, where he helped steer the company’s business strategy.
In addition, Halilu’s expertise in business and technology has been valuable to Dantata Foods Ltd., aiding in their operational and strategic advancements. His work with Fata Tannery and Sudabelt Medical further demonstrates his broad expertise, spanning industries from manufacturing to healthcare, underscoring his capability in managing and advising across various business sectors.
In 2019, he founded The CANs Technology Hub, the first eco-friendly facility of its kind in West Africa. The idea was inspired by his desire to tackle the absence of creative and leadership opportunities for young Nigerians.
Today, at NASENI, the work continues, and the passion remains unflagging. Under Halilu’s leadership, NASENI has become a beacon of innovation, focusing on developing cutting-edge technologies tailored to meet the specific needs of Nigeria and the broader African region. By nurturing a culture of collaboration, creation, and commercialization within the agency – the 3Cs of NASENI – he has created a fertile ground for groundbreaking ideas to flourish.
Halilu’s focus areas at NASENI, outlined in the new Strategic Launchpad, include Engineering & Manufacturing, Renewable Energy & Sustainability, and Health & Biotechnology. Another area of focus is NASENI’s light manufacturing arm, which specializes in translating prototypes into small-scale production, ensuring quality and scalability. “My goal is transforming the agency into a model of public sector excellence,” he says.
As Halilu continues to lead the charge toward African solutions, his dedication serves as an inspiration to the next generation of innovators and changemakers. Through his pursuit of sustainable development through technology, he is shaping the future and contributing to a renaissance of African innovation that promises to transcend borders and transform societies.
“I am unwavering in my resolve to position NASENI as a symbol of excellence and ingenuity,” he says. “I see a future where African innovations are celebrated globally and our solutions pave the way for a brighter and more prosperous Africa.”
