Kingsley Obiukwu Foundation’s Tournament Fosters Peaceful Coexistence

As the Kingsley Obiukwu Foundation’s Unity Cup 2024 tournament advances to its semi-final stage, it continues to promote peaceful coexistence and community unity.
The ongoing event in Nnewi South Local Government Area, Anambra state, has generated immense excitement among residents, showcasing the power of sports to bring people together and celebrate talent

Addressing newsmen, the convener, Kingsley Obiukwu, noted that the tournament which serves as a valuable tool for social change, runs from August to September and involves the ten towns of Nnewi South.

He noted that in a region where peace and security can be fragile, the tournament is vital to engaging the minds of youths.

Kingsley also hinted that the influx of spectators into the town is benefitting local businesses. Stressing that the final cash prizes, ₦700,000, ₦500,000, and ₦300,000 for the top 3 teams, offer more than just financial incentives; they aim to foster a sense of communal spirit and encourage ongoing community development.

In his words: “The Kingsley Obiukwu Foundation Unity Cup 2024 is more than just a football tournament; it is a powerful symbol of peace. In a region where peace and security can sometimes be fragile, the Unity Cup stands out as a vital initiative. By engaging youths in positive, structured activities, the tournament is helping to ease tensions, guide young people away from crime, and promote a culture of peace.

“This year’s tournament brings together the towns of Amichi, Azigbo, Ekwulumili, Osumenyi, Ukpor, Akwaihedi, Ebenator, Ezinifite, Unubi, and Utuh. Each match goes beyond sport, becoming a celebration of community spirit and a testament to the collective strength of these communities.

“The steady influx of spectators into each town for the football matches is also helping local businesses and vendors thrive, providing a much-needed boost to the local economy.”

One of the footballers from Osumenyi, Anthony Nwosu, showered encomium on the organisers of the tournament, emphasising the role of football in bringing people together.

He stated: “This tournament has been exciting so far and well organised. May God bless the Kingsley Obiukwu Foundation for choosing football because it unites everyone irrespective of their social or economic background.”
