Nigerian Community Joins Successful Beach Clean Exercise in Swansea


Swansea’s stunning seafront was revitalized during a successful Beach Clean event that brought together community members from diverse backgrounds, including a strong contingent of Nigerians.
The exercise which was held 1, September 2024, the event saw enthusiastic participants dedicate their afternoon to preserving the natural beauty of Swansea’s iconic coastline.

The Beach Clean attracted a wide array of volunteers, including many new arrivals from Nigeria, such as international students who have recently joined the Swansea community. For some, the experience of walking along Swansea’s sandy shores brought back memories of the beautiful beaches of Lagos, Nigeria.

From 1p.m to 4p.m, volunteers gathered at the Civic Centre on Oystermouth Road before spreading out across the beaches to collect litter, including beer bottles, ice-cream cartons, and dog waste.
The event was more than just a cleanup; it was a celebration of community spirit, with participants from various cultural backgrounds working together to ensure that Swansea remains a welcoming destination for all.


The Director of BAME Mental Health Support, Alfred Oyekoya, commended the initiative,
In his words: “It is vital for ethnic minorities to be actively involved in adding value to the communities they live in. Participating in events like this not only helps preserve the beauty of our host countries but also strengthens the bonds between different cultural groups. The Nigerian community in Swansea has shown that we are committed to making a positive impact, and this Beach Clean is a great example of that commitment.”


The event was conducted under the guidelines of Surfers Against Sewage, with public liability insurance ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants.
Volunteers were provided with cleaning kits, allowing them to efficiently tackle the litter while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.

After the hard work was done, volunteers were treated to an opportunity to enjoy local food, further fostering a sense of community among the diverse group of participants.
The presence of Nigerian cuisine offered a taste of home for many and introduced others to the rich flavours of Nigeria.
This effort highlights the strong ties between the Nigerian community and Swansea, showcasing a shared commitment to preserving the city’s treasured landmarks like Swansea Bay and Mumbles Pier.
The successful turnout and positive impact of the event are a testament to the unity and dedication within the community.
