Stakeholders Outline Steps to Boost Solar Energy Penetration

Experts and stakeholders in the Nigerian energy sector have listed a number of actions and policy steps needed to boost solar energy contribution to the country’s electricity space.

Speaking at the Renewable Energy Webinar on Energy Transition through Solar Energy, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Mrs Abiola Kosegbe, emphasised the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders, including government agencies, to advocate policies supporting the growth of the solar energy sector in Nigeria.

She highlighted the transformative potential of renewable energy, particularly solar, wind, and hydro in meeting Nigeria’s energy needs while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

She informed that Lagos State had set an ambitious target to generate 50 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, with initiatives like the ‘Solar for All’ programme playing a crucial role in achieving the goal.

Kosegbe stressed the need for continued investment in infrastructure, supportive policies, and collaboration to sustain the growth of renewable energy in Lagos and across Nigeria.

In his address, the Head, Renewable Energy at the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mr. Sulu Ibrahim, observed that Solar PV holds immense potential to transform Nigeria’s energy landscape, with applications ranging from home systems to large-scale utility projects.
