Refugee Commission Leaves for Borno Today with Food, Other Items

The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, NCFRMI, will today leave for Borno State with supplies to cushion the effects of flood that has ravaged most parts of the state.

This was as 40 per cent of the states farmlands had been placed under siege ahead of the harvest season with the destruction of crops which is likely to increase food security.

Federal Commissioner of the Commission, Tijjani Ahmed, who disclosed this at a press briefing, said the commission would also provide mental health and psychosocial support to the traumatised population.

While calling on the federal government for more support to live up to its responsibilities, he said in order to prevent a reoccurrence of the unfortunate incident, the commission will liaise with stakeholders to organise advocacy on the need to educate households to ensure clearing of drainage lines to allow for seamless flow of water.

“In line with our mandate, which is vested with the responsibility of ensuring protection, assistance, care maintenance and rehabilitation as well as provision for durable solutions to those displaced by climate change induced disasters, will provide food, non-food items, educational materials, WASH, shelter, drugs and medical supplies for emergency needs.

“About 40 per cent of farmlands are under siege ahead of the harvest season. The destruction of crops is likely to increase food insecurity which has affected over a million people.

“Flowing for the needs assessment carried out, many persons have been displaced, some children declared missing and lives lost. Infrastructural facilities including bridges, roads, houses have been affected, hampering access to hospitals, school, markeus, and other livelihood activities.”
