#EndBadGovernance Protest: Nigerian Couple Sends SoS to FG over Indictment
A Nigerian couple, Onyedikachi Darlington and Uchenna Vivian have cried out over their indictment by the Nigerian Police on the recently held nationwide protest which was organized by citizens to express their displeasure over what they tagged ‘bad governance’ by the current administration.
A British national, Andrew Wynne, also known as Drew Povey was also declared wanted by the police over the protest while many other Nigerians were arrested and detained.
Darlington and his wife, Vivian fled the country shortly after the police declared Wynne wanted alongside some Nigerians, whom they had mentioned as part of the sponsors.
Darlington expressed regret that the government has been suppressing the protesters instead of responding to the citizens’ demands.
According to him, “The protests over #EndBadGovernance and #EndHunger have frightened the government but instead of the government providing solutions to the yearning of Nigerians the government turned to repression.”
Darlington and Vivian who are wanted alongside their colleagues Wynne, Lucky Obiyan and others for using their social media accounts to coordinate and sponsor the 10 days nationwide protest in Nigeria from 1st of August, 2024 to 10th of August 2024 tagged #ENDBADGOVERNANCE.
“For a harmless protest, some people had been murdered by various security forces, many were arrested and many have been charged for treason and felony, said Darlington who believed that the “Nigerian government have failed in its duty to provide and protect Nigerians who are dying in thousands over hunger and treatable diseases.”
Darlington called on the Nigerian government to focus on the task at hand to liberate Nigerians from hunger and clutch of poverty as many Nigerians drop into the poverty bracket everyday as a result of the government policies at the centre and subnational.
“An average Nigerian family cannot afford a decent meal let alone a 3-square meal. People are dying on a daily basis due to hunger, insecurity and poverty but instead of the government redirecting its attention to tackling these issues they have rather chased Nigerians with ridiculous charges for airing their views about governance,” adding that “Nigerian shall continue to protest against bad governance in the country through legitimate means.”
The End Bad Governance protests, widely known by the hashtags #EndBadGovernance or #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria, were a series of decentralized mass protests in Nigeria that mainly occurred from 1 August to 10 August 2024, triggered by the rising cost of living in the country.
