Finidi’s Rivers Condemns Amuneke to Another Defeat as Remo Stars Maintain Perfect Start
Finidi George came out on top in the much-anticipated clash of Super Eagles legends, as Rivers United secured a thrilling 3-1 win over Heartland FC in the Nigeria Professional Football League yesterday in Port Harcourt.
Rivers United coach Finidi knew only a win would solidify his credentials as the superior tactician on a day when his former Super Eagles teammate, Emmanuel Amunike, guided Heartland FC to Port Harcourt.
It was Amunike’s second consecutive defeat of the season after 1-3 home loss of Heartland FC at home to Enyimba last weekend in Owerri.
The two former internationals were both part of Nigeria’s victorious 1994 Africa Cup of Nations squad and are widely regarded as two of the best wingers in the country’s footballing history.
They were also among the Super Eagles’ goalscorers in Nigeria’s first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance in the United States in 1994.
Both men have since ventured into coaching and were shortlisted earlier this year for the Super Eagles head coach position.
Finidi was initially appointed but resigned after a month following poor results and an alleged lack of support from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Saturday’s NPFL match marked the first time Finidi and Amunike faced off as coaches.
It was, however, Finidi’s tactical edge and an inspired performance from forward Kabiru Abdullahi that secured victory for the Pride of Rivers.
Rivers United took the lead just three minutes into the game at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium. Taofeek Otaniyi headed the home side in front from Okon Aniekeme’s cross, capitalising on a defensive lapse by Heartland.
However, Heartland responded just before halftime when Christian Molokwu levelled the score, heading in from Chijioke Opara’s long throw after a costly error by the Rivers United goalkeeper.
The second half saw chances for both teams, but it was Rivers United who regained the lead in the 68th minute.
Kabiru Abdullahi’s effort found the back of the net at the near post, beating Heartland’s goalkeeper.
Abdullahi struck again deep into stoppage time with a superb free-kick, securing a two-goal cushion for Rivers United and sealing their first win of the season.
The victory lifts Rivers United to four points and temporarily to the top of the NPFL table, pending other results later in the weekend.
In contrast, Heartland remain at the bottom of the standings after suffering defeats in their first two matches of the campaign.
Amunike will be eager to guide his Owerri-based side back to winning ways after they were relegated last season and only returned to the NPFL through administrative decisions.
In Ikenne, Remo Stars maintained their winning streak with another one against visiting Sunshine Stars of Akure in the first Western derby of the season by a lone goal.
Remo Starts basking on their away win at Abia Warriors on the opening day of the season pipped their opponent by a lone goal.
It was Adeola Babawo’s goal in the 7th minute of the match that settled the score to leave Remo Stars at the top of the table ahead of other fixtures tonight.
