Mboho Exhibition in London to Celebrate African Art, Music, and Fashion

The Mboho exhibition, an annual event dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the diverse artistic traditions of Africa, is set to take place in London from October 10 to October 31, 2024. This year’s event coincides with Black History Month, adding a deep layer of cultural resonance.

Mboho will feature a wide array of artistic forms, including music, painting, body art, textiles, poetry, jewellery, sculpture, pottery, masks, and decorations. The exhibition aims to amplify Africa’s rich cultural heritage on the global stage by presenting unique pieces that span different decades, highlighting the nuances and interconnectedness of various artistic eras.

Mary-Jane Ohobu, the convener of the event, emphasised Africa’s unparalleled cultural diversity, noting that each region and nation on the continent boasts its own distinct traditions. She highlighted that Mboho offers a platform for creatives to express their imagination while honouring their African heritage, allowing artists to reflect on their cultural roots and share their stories with a broader audience.

The event will also include a fashion and music showcase, and a panel discussion will feature leading African artists, curators, and cultural scholars engaging in a thought-provoking conversation about the intersection of traditional and contemporary African art. The discussion will address the challenges faced by African artists in the global art market, with a particular emphasis on the importance of storytelling in African art and its role in shaping cultural identity.

This year’s event will feature contributions from across the African continent and the diaspora. Notable artists showcasing their work include Minika, Hakeem Salaam, FashionandcoEco, Mmakamba, Cute-Saint, Eneyi, Nyny Ryke, Tijani Charles, Theodore Calliste, Clemzy Art, and Christine Mike-Nnaji.
