NMU Governing Council Chairman seeks ways to halt challenges facing varsity

The Acting Chairman of the Governing Council of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Delta State,  Adewale Adeogun, has issued a strong call for immediate action to address the pressing challenges facing the institution.

Adeogun who spoke during the council meeting held in Warri expressed deep concern over the university’s underdevelopment despite its six-year existence.

Highlighting the urgent need for government intervention, Hon. Adeogun emphasized the importance of establishing a permanent campus and ensuring adequate funding. He pointed out that the university’s progress has been hindered by the suspension of projects initiated by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).

“It is disheartening to see that despite being a specialized university, Nigerian Maritime University is still struggling to find its footing,” Hon. Adeogun stated. “We must work tirelessly to secure government support, philanthropic contributions, and community involvement to propel the university forward.”

The Acting Chairman also underscored the critical role of collaboration between the Governing Council and University Management in addressing the institution’s challenges. He identified two key issues requiring immediate attention: the Nigerian Maritime University Bill and the NIMASA Act.

Hon. Adeogun called upon the relevant authorities to expedite the passage of the Nigerian Maritime University Bill through the House of Representatives and its subsequent signing into law by the President. He also emphasized the need for Nigerian Maritime University to be reinstated under the purview of NIMASA, ensuring adequate funding and support for the university’s operations.

“Nigerian Maritime University deserves to be a leading maritime institution in Nigeria,” Hon. Adeogun asserted.

“We must work together to create a conducive environment for our students and staff to thrive.”

The Acting Chairman concluded his address by pledging his commitment to transparency, accountability, and collaboration in leading the Governing Council.
