THISDAY’s Nwabogor, Ezeobi, Arise’s Mairo-Ese, Others Make 25 Most Powerful Women in Journalism List

THISDAY Style Editor, Konye Nwabogor, alongside the Group Features Editor for THISDAY Newspaper, Chiemelie Ezeobi, as well as Arise TV Morning Show Co-anchor, Ayo Mairo-Ese, were yesterday named amongst the 25 Most Powerful Women in Journalism (WIJ) 2024.

While Ezeobi moved four places from no 10th in 2023 to number six in 2024, Nwabogor clinched 14th spot this year, two positions up from the 2023 listing. 

 Also making the Leaders and Company Group proud was Mairo-Ese, who clinched number 16, as against the 25th position she attained in 2023. 

 While the number one spot was retained by the Director of News and Editor-in-Chief at TVC, Stella Din Jacob, Toun Sonaiya of Women FM, and Kadaria Ahmed of Radio Now cliched the second and third spots respectively. 

While Maupe Ogun Yusuf clinched the fourth spot, Azeezat Olaoluwa came in at fifth; Chiemelie Ezeobi went hard at sixth and Tessy Igomu of The Punch was the seventh.

 Amarachi Ubani of Channels Television came eight on the list while Sharon Ijasan, Siju Alabi,  Doja Allen, came in at ninth, 10th and 11th, respectively. 

The number 12th spot went to Your View ladies on TVC-Morayo Afolabi Brown, Tope Mark Odigie, Nymat Akashat, Mariam Longe and Obiajulu Ugboh, while Stephanie Busari came in at 13 and Konye Nwabogor of THISDAY Style came 14th.

Kikelomo Atanda Owo clinched the 15th position while Ayo Mairo Ese came 16th and the Jasiri on News Central team of Tolulope Adeleru Balogun, Omotunde David, Blessings Mosugu and Katherine Obiang took the 17th place.

The 18th position went to Neya Kalu while Nancy Iloh, Esther Omopariola, Kemi Ajumobi, Ini John Mekwa, Veronica Dan Ikpoyi, Ireti Bakare Yusuf and Funke Fayemi took the 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th and 25th positions, respectively. 

Annually, Women in Journalism Africa (WIJAFRICA) proudly honors Nigeria’s most influential female journalists.

These exceptional individuals have made lasting impacts on the industry and paved the way for women’s advancement in journalism. 

 Their remarkable achievements serve as a testament to their dedication, perseverance, and innovative storytelling. WIJAFRICA, a prestigious network of leading women journalists across Africa, recognises and celebrates these trailblazers through its annual list. 

 By highlighting their accomplishments, WIJAFRICA inspires a new generation of women journalists and reinforces the vital role they play in shaping the media landscape. 

 This esteemed recognition underscores the power of women’s voices in journalism, fostering a culture of excellence, diversity, and inclusivity throughout the industry.

Also, Victoria Ajayi, the Group Managing Director of TVC Communications; Madam Funke Moore, former General Manager of Lagos Television; Dr. Adeola Ekine, Chairperson of Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Lagos Chapter; Mrs. Ifeyinwa Omowole, former president, of Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Lagos Chapter; Jemi Ekunkunbor, Editor, Vanguard Allure; and Onah Nwachukwu Editor, The Will Downtown received honorary mentions. 

Others include Olive Emodi, Host the Breakfast Show, on News Central; Tewa Onasanya, Publisher Exquisite Magazine and founder Exquisite Woman of the Year; Azuka Ogujiuba, Founder, Media Room Hub; Nkem Onwudiwe, Fmounder, Her Network; and Debbie Larry Izamoje, COO Brilla FM. 

To wrap up the evening, Mr. Yomi Owope of WIJ announced that the group was awarding scholarships to young female journalists to the School of Media and Communication of the Pan Atlantic University, to build their skills.
