FMAN, IDH expand tree planting initiative with launch of 3,000 seedlings in Bauchi

Following the success of the Flour Milling Association of Nigeria (FMAN) and IDH’s tree planting initiative in Jigawa State, where 5,000 seedlings were planted, the project has now extended to Bauchi State.

On Thursday, September 26, an additional 3,000 seedlings were launched in a remarkable event held at Aminu Saleh College of Education, Azare, Bauchi.

The launch was spearheaded by Provost of Aminu Saleh College of Education, Prof. Asabe Sadiya Mohd with key dignitaries in attendance, including Senior Special Assistant to the Bauchi State Governor, Dr. Iliyasu Aliyu Gital, who represented the Governor, and Director of Forestry, Alh. Danlami Ahmad Kawule, who represented the Commissioner of Environment. The event also saw the presence of esteemed royal fathers and members of the school’s leadership team, marking a significant milestone for environmental sustainability in the region.

The tree planting initiative features a diverse selection of seedlings—Mango (Mangifera indica), Guava (Psidium guajava), Cashew (Anacardium occidentale), and Citrus (Citrus spp.)—chosen for their longevity (20-40 years) and their high economic value. These species will not only serve as windbreakers, protecting farmland from erosion and desertification but will also offer fruit production, providing vital nutrition and generating substantial economic benefits for the local communities.

This initiative is set to have a transformative effect on both the environment and the economy of Bauchi. The introduction of fruit-bearing trees will open up new income streams for local farmers, thereby strengthening the regional economy and contributing to Nigeria’s broader agricultural and food security goals. Moreover, the initiative will promote the development of agro-industries, create jobs, and elevate the livelihoods of farmers and their families.

As part of FMAN’s larger commitment to supporting small holder farmers, the organisation has been empowering farmers in six wheat growing states for over three years. Through input loans, training programmes, and extension services, FMAN has supported more than 10,000 farmers and trained over 30,000 in advanced wheat production practices. The tree planting initiative is a natural extension of this mission, aimed at diversifying income opportunities and promoting sustainable agriculture.

“This tree planting initiative reflects our dedication to sustainable development and the economic empowerment of farmers,” said Head of Value Chain Development at FMAN, Aliyu Samaila. “We are delighted to continue our partnership with IDH to bring lasting environmental and economic benefits to Bauchi State and the entire country.”

Beyond the economic advantages, the environmental benefits are immense. Tree planting contributes to soil conservation, carbon sequestration, and enhanced biodiversity. It also provides social and communal benefits such as improved air quality and the creation of green spaces that foster social interaction and recreational activities.
IDH is a Dutch-funded organisation focused on transforming markets and enabling businesses to create value for both people and the planet. They bring together stakeholders across global value chains to innovate and invest in sustainable and inclusive trade solutions.

The Flour Milling Association of Nigeria (FMAN) is a consortium of major milling companies in Nigeria, dedicated to advancing Nigeria’s wheat production capabilities and ensuring sustainable agricultural development.
