The first female chairman of the Nigerian Institutiont of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV) Abuja branch, Folake Odusiga, has urged for greater representation of women in leadership positions within the profession.

Odusiga, who was recently honoured as the 13th chairman and the first female president of the Abuja branch, stressed the importance of breaking down gender barriers and recognizing the valuable contributions women can make to leadership roles.

“In the past, we’ve never had a female chairman before. I think it’s about time for us to recognize women in all aspects,” she said. “When a woman is in leadership, the role of a woman is more significant when you compare it with that of a man.”

Reflecting on her own journey, Odusiga expressed hope that her leadership would inspire other women to become more actively involved in the institution.

“In the past, our men didn’t want us to be in leadership,” she said. “But I believe that my election as chairman will pave the way for more female participation.”

As part of her vision for the branch, Odusiga emphasized the importance of mentoring younger generations and fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors.

“One of my visions is to encourage those younger ones in secondary school by carrying them along when they are young,” she said. “As a public servant, my vision is also to bridge the gap between the public and private sector.”

Odusiga called for increased involvement of public entities in the institution’s activities, noting that “since the institution comprises the private and the public sector, it’s essential for collaboration to thrive.”
