NITDA: We Have Designed Initiatives to Address Challenges in Deploying A1 Tech in Nigeria

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA,) at the weekend said it has designed initiatives and policies to ensure Nigerians defeat likely challenges in the deployment of AI technologies in the country.


The agency said it has equipped the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) to achieve positive trends on the new technologies.


The Director General/Chief Executive Officer of NITDA, Mr. Kashifu Inuwa, stated this in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, while speaking on the theme: “Leveraging Artificial Intelligence for Strategic Communication,” at the unveiling of PRNigeria Ilorin centre office and its 2024 Young Communication Fellowship.


The event was organised by a media outfit, PRNigeria on the sideline of its 2024 Young Communication Fellowship workshop on Public Relations Digital practice on the new emerging A1 technologies in the country.


He said: “The NITDA is now developing robust policies, to ensure the responsible deployment of AI technologies for the people of the country.


“And at NITDA, we believe in harnessing the power of AI to build a future that is not only innovative but also ethical and inclusive”.
The DG added: “We have set forth these initiatives to foster digital literacy, AI training, and capacity building that ensure Nigeria has the human capital necessary to thrive in this AI-driven era.


“Our National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) is created and dedicated to A1 research, innovation, and skills development.


“And this hub is meant to foster digital literacy, AI training, and capacity building that ensure Nigeria has the human capital necessary to thrive in this AI-driven era.”


Inuwa pointed out further that the rise of social media, digital platforms, and 24/7 news cycles have altered how information is shared and consumed.


Allaying fears entertained in certain quarters that the birth of AI would threaten many jobs, Inuwa said: “AI is now playing a critical role in managing this vast landscape.


“And, whether through automated content generation, data analytics, or chatbots for real-time customer interaction, AI enhances the efficiency and effectiveness of communication efforts.”


He said that NITDA recognises the transformative potential of AI in redefining communications, engaging the public, and strategizing in an increasingly interconnected world.


His words: “AI is no longer a futuristic concept. It is here, and it is revolutionizing industries, especially the field of communication. In the digital age, strategic communication has undergone a significant paradigm shift.


“For public relations professionals, AI offers tools to predict trends, understand audience sentiment, and tailor messages in ways that were previously unimaginable.


“Through Natural Language Processing (NLP), AI systems can analyze massive datasets, monitor media coverage, and even respond to crises in real-time.


“This gives communicators the agility needed to navigate today’s complex media environment.”


Also speaking as the guest of honour at the event, the state governor and Chairman, Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Alhaji AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, said it was high time for the media practitioners in the country to design skill development and networking opportunities so as to assist the country achieve robust communication framework.

He said: “Empowering young communicators through mentorship, skill development, and networking opportunities is crucial in building a robust communication framework for our nation”.

AbdulRazaq, represented by the state Commissioner for Communications, Mrs. Bola Olukoju, said: “As we explore the rapidly evolving landscape of digital media, public relations, and communications, it is important that we invest in the next generation of leaders in this field”.

He added: “The role of effective communication cannot be overemphasized, whether in governance, public health, business, or the promotion of social good. It is through strong, transparent, and informed communication that we foster trust, collaboration, and shared progress.

“I am particularly proud to witness many bright and passionate young minds coming together for this fellowship.

“You are the future storytellers, message carriers, and media strategists who will shape how information is shared and how communities connect with their governments.

“As you embark on this journey, I encourage you to seize the opportunities ahead of you – to learn, grow, and build the relationships that will propel you toward success.

“I also urge you to take the values of integrity, responsibility, and creativity with you as you navigate your careers.

“Your contributions to our national development, through effective and ethical communication, are essential”.

In his remarks, the Chief Executive Officer of the PRNigerian, Mallam Yushau Shuaib, said that out 140 persons that applied for the training, 10 persons were approved due to the availability of the space and equipment meant for the workshop.

He said: “The 10 selected people were exposed to more in-depth training on Public Relations practices and took them two weeks for the training”.

According to him, “PRNigeria has made significant strides in nurturing the next generation of communicators through impactful capacity-building programmes, including internships and mentorship opportunities, culminating in the newly launched Young Communication Fellowship”.

Shuaib said: “Over the past three years, PRNigeria has equipped more than 280 journalists and writers to navigate the evolving landscape of digital journalism and has empowered 1,387 young Nigerians with vital digital skills.

Shuaib noted that, no fewer than 300 people would benefit from the training in Kwara State before the end of 2025.

He therefore commended the assistance of the Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, in the project.
