Filmmaker Toma Enakarhire reflects on Balancing Artistry, Leadership, Social Responsibility

Toma Enakarhire, a notable filmmaker and former theatre actor, has been making waves in the Nigerian film industry since he embraced his passion for filmmaking in 2009. Enakarhire, who began his journey with a touring theatre troupe, discovered his calling in the world of film while training at Royalroots Media. “I jumped on the opportunity and there was no turning back,” he recalls.

Enakarhire’s entrepreneurial spirit is fueled by his lifelong dissatisfaction with traditional career paths. “I was very dissatisfied in my former place of work,” he said. “That’s what drove me to quit and follow my dream, which is my current career path as a filmmaker.” His commitment to storytelling is inspired by his imaginative nature, which he describes as a form of escapism. “Film making is a form of escapism. I was always an imaginative person, and interpreting stories is my preferred method of expression.”

The journey has not been without its challenges. Enakarhire notes that the Nigerian film industry, still emerging on the global stage, struggles with funding and work conditions. “We don’t have any major studios here, which means we don’t have the big budgets, so we have to put in extra work and brain power,” he explains. “The desire to be the best at what I do taught me discipline and character development.”

Despite the hurdles, Enakarhire has achieved significant milestones, including participation in international projects focusing on advocacy and collaboration with organizations such as the International Organization for Migration and the International Centre for Migration Policy Development. His proudest moments, he shares, are when he sees those who look up to him grow into successful individuals.

Guided by core values of integrity and competence, Enakarhire believes in “leadership by example.” He strives to inspire others rather than dwell on problems, focusing on solutions instead. “I try to always be the best example to others,” he emphasizes.

Outside of filmmaking, Enakarhire is also dedicated to philanthropy, particularly supporting widows, a cause close to his heart following the passing of his father. “I know how hard it is for widows to cope after losing a husband. I always try my best to show support to widows,” he states.

Enakarhire further revealed his plans to establish youth development centers across Nigeria, believing in the importance of investing in the next generation. He is inspired by the philosophy that “everything you’ve ever wanted is sitting on the other side of fear,” which motivates him to confront challenges head-on while maintaining a balance between work and personal life through relaxation and quiet time.

Toma Enakarhire continues to inspire many in the film industry and beyond, showcasing the power of passion, resilience, and community investment in shaping a brighter future.
