A microcredit facility, Life Above Poverty Organization, LAPO, has revealed that in its continued fight to eradicate poverty, it has disbursed over N1.4 trillion in microcredit to low-income earners since its establishment in 1987.
It said other beneficiaries include petty traders, small holder farmers, and small businesses across the country that are contributing significantly to economic stimulation and national prosperity.

LAPO, a leading non-governmental organization, stated this yesterday through its Head, Programme and Communications, Dr. James-Wisdom Abhulimen ahead of its 31st Annual Development Forum on Thursday, October 24, 2024.
He said this year’s forum, themed “Paradox of Poverty in a ‘Wealthy Nation’: Policy Issues & Perspectives,” aims to explore Nigeria’s persistent poverty amid vast economic potential.

The LAPO Development Forum aligns with the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and has, since its inception in 1994, become a premier platform for addressing poverty and development challenges in Nigeria and Africa.
He said: “Since its establishment in 1987, LAPO has disbursed over ₦1.4 trillion in microcredit to low-income earners, including petty traders, small holder farmers, and small businesses across the country, contributing significantly to economic stimulation and national prosperity.
“It provides a platform for stakeholders to critically analyze this paradox and discuss actionable strategies to foster an inclusive, prosperous future.

“The 2024 edition offers an important opportunity for stakeholders to engage in meaningful dialogue and chart pathways toward sustainable development and wealth creation.”
This year’s conference will be chaired by former governor of Edo State, John Odigie-Oyegun, while the Country Director of ActionAid Nigeria, Mr. Andrew Mamedu will deliver the keynote address. Also expected to attend the event is the Minister of State for Agriculture, Sen. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, who will serve as the Special Guest of Honour.
