Public Health Expert Focuses on Transforming Women’s Healthcare Access in Nigeria

Mikail T. Aliyu is a renowned public health expert, who has been instrumental in advancing healthcare access for women across Nigeria.

His work, in collaboration with the Nigerian government, has played a pivotal role in revolutionising reproductive healthcare, particularly for women in rural areas.

In 2020, the Nigerian government launched a groundbreaking initiative to distribute a self-injectable contraceptive nationwide, empowering women to take control of their reproductive health.

The project, which was initiated before the COVID-19 pandemic, became even more crucial as the pandemic strained healthcare systems globally.

During this time, the contraceptive gave women, particularly those in remote areas, the ability to manage their reproductive health privately and safely from home, reducing their dependence on overcrowded clinics.

Aliyu, who led the Technical Support Unit for the project, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, emphasised the importance of the initiative. “We wanted to create a sustainable system where women could access healthcare on their own terms,” he explained.

According to the public health expert, the introduction of self-injectable contraceptives was a significant step toward this goal.

“Not only did it offer greater convenience and autonomy, but it also became a lifeline during the pandemic, which left many women without access to traditional healthcare facilities.

“The Nigerian government collaborated closely with local health workers to ensure that proper training and resources were made available nationwide.”

This effort ensured that the contraceptives were not only widely accessible but also safe for women to use independently. The successful implementation of this initiative set a new standard for healthcare projects designed to empower communities through sustainable, localised solutions.

Reflecting on the initiative’s impact, Aliyu noted, “This wasn’t just ordinary family planning.

“Family planning has come a long way, but this was different. It was about giving women a tool that could change their lives.”

He acknowledged that the government’s strong support and engagement with local communities were crucial to its success.

The introduction of self-administered healthcare solutions in Nigeria serves as a shining example of how government-led initiatives can have a lasting impact on public health.

His work with government agencies continues to shape healthcare policies across the country, ensuring that women, regardless of their location, have the resources they need to take charge of their health.

This project demonstrates how strategic collaboration between public health experts, the government, and international foundations can lead to sustainable improvements in healthcare access—improvements that empower women and strengthen communities for the long term.
