Princewill Nnaji: Elevating Southeast Nigeria’s Hospitality Scene

By “Justin Chibueze Ekwueme”

The hospitality scene in Southeast Nigeria is entering a new era, largely driven by Princewill Nnaji. As the visionary behind Ann’s Restaurant and Bar and multiple other ventures in Nigeria, he has created a venue in the coal city that harmoniously blends intercontinental and local flavors, offering a refined dining experience in a setting that’s both modern and welcoming. With high-rise ceilings and glass walls that allow natural light to flood the space, Ann’s provides a sophisticated yet open environment, inviting guests to relax and connect. Following his success in Abuja, where he established Ann’s Abuja and the popular VIBEz Lounge, Princewill has brought his innovative approach to the Southeast, contributing to the region’s growing reputation as a culinary destination.

Supportive Governance Under Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah:

A Pillar for Business Growth: The success of ventures like Ann’s Restaurant and Bar can be attributed not only to the entrepreneurial spirit of its founder but also to the conducive business environment fostered by the Enugu State Government, led by Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah. Under his leadership, Enugu has seen significant improvements in infrastructure, security, and investment-friendly policies, all of which have paved the way for smoother business operations. This supportive governance plays a crucial role in attracting investments and promoting entrepreneurship, making the region an attractive destination for innovative ventures like Ann’s.

A Journey from Privilege to Purpose:

Princewill’s story is one of tradition, ambition, and redefining expectations. Coming from the esteemed Nnaji family of Nike in Enugu, and as the son of Senator Gilbert Nnaji, he grew up in an environment that emphasized community and legacy. The family name carries significant weight in the region, so much that multiple streets in the city take after the Nnaji name, including the place where Ann’s is currently cited. This legacy could be seen as a privilege and a responsibility, shaping Princewill’s identity and aspirations.

His journey to establishing Ann’s started in Abuja whereafter the business was met by the 2020 lockdown chaos that threatened the effectiveness and future of the young hospitality empire. Princewill was able to devise smart means for the business to operate, and despite everything he came out strong.

Having an influential father and a powerful surname that attracted top tier job offers made the topic of his future a very controversial one. Princewill’s passion for business and the hospitality industry was always profound but his father’s desire was in conflict. Princewill rejected multiple big-seat offers, including some from CBN and NCC to establish his businesses. Did his father, a political bigwig ever truly accept the idea of the Ann’s hospitality empire? That question may remain unanswered.

From my observations, it was evident that Princewill feels a deep sense of fulfillment when discussing the journey of Ann’s. His satisfaction stems not just from the success of the restaurant but from what it represents — a new chapter, a bridge between past memories and future aspirations. Through his calm demeanor and reflective tone, one could sense a profound gratitude. Princewill’s ability to turn a family heritage site into a thriving business is a testament of his doggedness and in his words “keeping the eyes on the ball”.

Looking Forward:

Princewill envisions Ann’s Restaurant and Bar as more than just a local establishment. He sees it as a brand that can be synonymous with quality and innovation beyond Nigeria.

“The goal is to reflect the richness of Southeast Nigeria, not just through our dishes but through the overall experience and the stories we tell,” Princewill shares. By fostering connections with local artisans and producers, he aims to highlight the culture and creativity of the region, making it an appealing destination for visitors from across the world.

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs in Enugu

Princewill’s journey offers valuable insights for young entrepreneurs, particularly those in the Southeast. From his approach, it’s clear that staying true to a vision and being open to innovation are essential. He suggests using one’s background as a foundation but letting passion and hard work define the journey. Princewill’s dedication challenges the stereotype that children from affluent families are often complacent or lack ambition. His story shows how privilege can serve as a platform for impactful ventures rather than a safety net.
