Nigeria Shines At UN SDG Awards as Oborevwori Receives Recognition for Youth Inclusiveness

The Nigerian flag waved proudly at the 2024 edition of the UN SDG Awards, which was held in Rome, Italy, with six Nigerians in attendance as delegates.

In a statement, one of the delegates, who is the Senior Special Assistant to the Delta State Governor on youth mentoring and development, Ambassador Elvis Akpobi, disclosed that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, received a much deserved commendation for his dedication to youth inclusion and development in Delta State.

Akpobi said that the six man Nigerian delegates were led by renowned activist, and CEO of Connected Development, Hamzat Lawal, to participate in this esteemed event, showcasing Nigeria’s commitment to youth empowerment and importantly catalysing change .

He added that Governor Oborevwori’s youth-centric governance and unwavering support for youth leadership initiatives in Delta State were highlighted, saying that inclusion breeds peace, and peace breeds development.

The statement added that the 2024 ceremony, held on October 29, celebrated winners from over 5,000 applications across 190 countries.

The event, themed: “Inspiring Hope and Putting Hope into Action,” focused on creating opportunities and safe spaces for people to dream and live their dreams.

The awards ceremony was broadcast globally through UN WebTV and Italian national broadcaster Rai.

The statement further disclosed that the UN SDG Action Awards programme is made possible by the generous financial support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development.

This year’s finalists included initiatives such as Shattering Stereotypes About Down Syndrome, Restructuring the music industry to achieve gender equality, and Poetry Driving Change through Advocacy Against Social Injustices Across Africa.
