Africa Celebrates 2024: Uniting Culture, Innovation, Progress in Addis Ababa
From November 6 to 10, 2024, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, became the epicenter of Africa’s cultural and economic vibrancy as it hosted Africa Celebrates 2024, the continent’s largest Pan-African event.
Delegates from 41 African countries and 13 nations across the diaspora gathered for a five-day showcase of unity, innovation, and collaboration, blending art, culture, business, and tradition.
On November 5 was the arrival of participants, many aboard Ethiopian Airlines, the official airline partner.
At Bole International Airport, the Africa Celebrates Protocol Team, led by Tesfaye Gebremichael, welcomed attendees with seamless efficiency.
Delegates were then transported to the luxurious Skylight Hotel, the event’s accommodation partner, where they were immersed in Ethiopia’s renowned hospitality.
November 6 marked the official opening at the historic Africa Hall in the UNECA complex.
The event commenced with opening remarks delivered by Her Excellency, Ambassador Minata Samate Cessouma, Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development of the African Union Commission, who was ably represented by Dr Abel Basutu.
Other remarks were made Amb Willy Nyamitwe, Ambassador of Burundi to Ethiopia, Mikael Cleverly, Charge d’ Affair of the US Delegation to the African Union, Her Excellency, Selamawit Kassa, Minister of Tourism of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, His Excellency, Pedro Leon Cortes Ruiz, Colombia Ambassador to Kenya who represented the Vice President of Colombia and His Excellency, Amb Mohammed Arrouchi, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Morocco to the African Union, represented by Saad EL Qamcaoui.
Their speeches inspired the audience, which included African royalty, business leaders, and stakeholders from around the globe.
The day continued with the inauguration of the Made in Africa Exhibition by Minister Kassa.
This vibrant display of products, craftsmanship, and innovation celebrated African entrepreneurship and fostered valuable business connections.
Alongside the exhibition, the Africa Talks Business and Investment Forum explored strategies for accelerating economic growth, while the African Traditional Leaders Forum discussed the role of heritage and traditional governance in fostering peace and unity.
Simultaneously, the African Fashion Business Summit delved into the evolving relationship between creativity and commerce in the fashion industry.
On November 7, the focus shifted to inclusivity with the Down Syndrome and Other Intellectual Disability Awareness Initiative.
This inspiring session emphasized the importance of empowering individuals with disabilities and creating a society that values every member. Discussions addressed challenges and solutions, underscoring the event’s commitment to equality and opportunity.
Meanwhile, the Women’s Forum, inspired by the Beijing Conference, explored the vital roles of women in shaping Africa’s future.
Sessions highlighted gender equality, women’s rights, and economic empowerment. Across the venue, the Afro Film Alliance Forum celebrated African storytelling through film screenings, while the Afro Tech and Innovation Forum introduced groundbreaking technological advancements designed to propel the continent forward.
The evening brought a cultural celebration with the Cultural Night of African Music, Dance, and Cuisine. Held at UNECA’s East Parking, the event featured electrifying performances from artists like Muma Gee of Nigeria, Queen Stella Aicha of Burkina Faso, Maalem Chrif Kadiri from Morocco and Ethiopia’s Addis Kana band.
Guests enjoyed traditional African dishes while dancing to the rhythms of the continent, creating an atmosphere of joy and unity.
On November 8, young leaders took the stage at the Africa Youth Forum. This intergenerational dialogue focused on empowering Africa’s youth through mentorship, education, and leadership.
Across the venue, the Wellness and Beauty Expo Africa highlighted the growing influence of Africa’s health and beauty industries.
Later, the Gala Fashion and Awards Night – Africa Fashion Reception dazzled attendees at the Sheraton Luxury Hotel.
Stunning collections by African designers showcased a fusion of tradition and modernity, celebrating the creativity and craftsmanship of the continent’s fashion industry.
The evening was a glamorous tribute to Africa’s burgeoning role on the global fashion stage.
November 9 offered delegates a chance to experience Addis Ababa’s cultural richness.
City tours led participants to historic landmarks and bustling markets, immersing them in Ethiopia’s history and craftsmanship.
Shopping excursions introduced delegates to local artisans whose creations embodied the beauty and diversity of African artistry.
The event concluded on November 10 with a series of final discussions at the African Union’s Nelson Mandela Hall. Key insights from the forums were revisited, culminating in a celebratory closing ceremony that highlighted the accomplishments of Africa Celebrates 2024. Delegates departed with renewed inspiration, already anticipating the next edition in 2025.
