FG Inaugurates Committee to Develop Civil Service Comprehensive Style Manual

The Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Didi Esther Walson-Jack has inaugurated a committee to develop a comprehensive style manual that will serve as a guiding framework for all official communications and documentations across ministries, departments and agencies.

The committee which has three-month time line is to be headed by a retired Permanent Secretary FCT Administration, Mr Adesola Olusade.

Walson-Jack said at the inauguration of the committee that part of the terms of reference of the committee was to standardise the fonts, templates, stationery and writing style that will create a standardized communication and documentation system for the federal civil service that reflects its dedication to service excellence.

She describes communication as a process shapes public perception and determines the efficiency of the service’s internal processes.

“In a service as vast and diverse as ours, consistent and clear communication and documentation are essential. Today, with this inauguration, we will affirm our commitment to clarity, professionalism, consistency and accountability in all our interactions both internal and external,” she said.

In addition, the HoS explained that the committee will make recommendations on the styles and elements of the identified needs of communication in service and define appropriate language to be used, including acceptable vocabulary, tone and formality levels, as well as provide standardized formats for letters, memos report circulars and other official documents.

“The committee will establish rules for consistent grammar, punctuation and sentence structure. And of course, it should bring up any other recommendations it thinks is appropriate to enhance implementation of the initiative,” Walson-Jack said.

In his remarks, Olusade thanked for the confidence reposed in the committee.

He assured that the committee will approach it diligence, inclusivity and with a sheer vision of elevating the standard of the civil service that will remain for generation to come.
