Voice of Women Foundation Takes a Stand Against Violence, Discrimination
Mary Nnah
As the world marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the Voice of Women Foundation for Peace and Unity is taking a bold stand against violence and discrimination.
The organisation’s president, Mrs. Chizoba Anyika, emphasized that every day is crucial in reiterating the safety and security of women, and this special day serves as a reminder and a call to action.
The statistics are staggering – one in three women worldwide experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, and 38% of murders of women are committed by a male partner. But despite these alarming numbers, the Voice of Women Foundation remains committed to creating a safer and more equitable world for women, especially in Africa.
The organisation is advocating for policies that promote gender diversity and challenge harmful gender stereotypes. It is pushing for a global affirmative action, starting with the annual “16 Days of Action Against Gender-Based Violence” campaign. This campaign, which runs from November 25th to December 10th, aims to raise awareness and mobilize efforts to prevent and respond to violence against women.
“Every day is important to reiterate the safety and security of women, however, this special day is a reminder and a call to action to raise awareness and mobilize efforts in preventing and responding to issues pertaining to violence against women,” said Anyika.
Anyika stressed that women experience a lot of mental and physical violence, but many do not speak up for fear of stigmatization.
“It can take many forms, including physical, emotional, and psychological abuse, even in public offices,” she said. “Women experience bias which are executed through conspiracies and gang-ups which can affect their mental health adversely”, she noted.
The Voice of Women Foundation is also planning a workshop to raise awareness and promote women’s safety and security. By educating themselves and others, sharing resources, and engaging in conversations, they hope to get the attention of relevant organizations and encourage them to review laws and policies that protect women.
According to Anyika, the organisation is committed to advocacy for policies that promote gender diversity in addition to challenging violence against women.
“It is time to empower more women and encourage their participation in decision-making processes as well as promoting their leadership participation in various sectors,” she said.
As Mrs. Anyika so eloquently put it, “Together, we can make a difference and work towards a world where women and girls can live free from violence and fear. Together, we can make a difference and work towards a world where women and girls can live free from violence, fear, and intimidation even in the workplace.”
The Voice of Women Foundation is a shining example of the power of collective action and determination. By supporting organisations like this, we can create a brighter, more equitable future for women and girls everywhere.
