How Nigerian Sports Institutions Are Elevating Africa’s Sporting Landscape

Sports University Nigeria (SUN), the first privately owned sports university in Africa, is set to ramp up sporting activities in Nigeria and Africa, making it more attractive and rewarding to sportsmen and women.

Founded by Prince Ned Munir Nwoko, SUN started its academic program in May 2022, consisting mainly of scholarship students based on the trials they hold annually. The university also offers regular student careers, offering a list of degree programs that can be studied simultaneously with any sport of their choice.

“Africa has been blessed with a lot of talent in the world of sports, a chunk of the greatest players in the world have hailed from Africa or African ancestry and have made notable contributions in all areas of the world of sports.

“Nigeria is heavily regarded as the giant of Africa mainly because it’s the African country with the largest population, Due to the high number of talented athletes in and from Nigeria, we have had several athletes play for other countries which is majorly due to the lack of opportunities in Nigeria. SUN is here to help underprivileged individuals with a talent for sports flourish,” Nwoko said.

In addition to SUN, other foundations have taken an interest in the sports talents domiciled in underserved communities. A good example is the Oghenemairo Adolor Foundation.

Run by Oghenemairo Adolor, the Foundation helps talented young African athletes in communities around Nigeria and Africa. The Oghenemairo Adolor Foundation holds trials in multiple sporting activities at the end of every year in West  Africa

The Patoranking Foundation, founded by award-winning Afro-dancehall singer and songwriter, Patrick Nnaemeka Okorie aka Patoranking also works with young Nigerians to discover and develop their talents in sports.

To its credit, the Patoranking Foundation has constructed a modernised football turf for young and promising footballers in Ebute Meta, Lagos, Nigeria. The beautifully constructed turf was officially opened on Saturday, June 28 2024.
