A Nigerian filmmaker, photographer, and storyteller, Ikechukwu Henry Okeagu, has urged aspiring photographers and visual artists to combine their passion for the craft with an understanding of the business side of the creative industry.
Okeagu made this call during the launch of his studio, ‘Jabe Studios and Gallery’ on Friday in Abuja, a hub for photography, videography, and creative collaboration.
Reflecting on his 18-year journey in photography, Okeagu shared how his passion initially drove his work but emphasized that financial success requires more than artistic talent.
“We are often so passionate about the craft that we neglect the business side, Over time, I’ve learned that understanding the business is crucial for sustaining yourself and avoiding exploitation in the industry.” He noted
Okeagu explained that many artists face challenges in Nigeria’s tough economic environment, particularly when starting with limited resources.
However, he advised photographers to focus on their skills and consistently improve.
“The best camera is the one you have with you,” he said. “Years of training have taught me that even a phone with manual settings can produce great work if you know what you’re doing.”
Addressing young and struggling creatives, he encouraged persistence and growth.
“You may not make your big financial break immediately, but with every shot you take, you get better. Regret is not an option for any artist. Keep pushing, and your skill will eventually open doors.” He said.
Okeagu also emphasized the importance of showcasing your work as a creative; He noted that his new gallery space in Abuja, will serve as a photography and videography studio, which will allow creatives to express themselves while presenting the beauty of Nigeria’s landscapes, wildlife, and culture.
“Many people have a negative view of Nigeria, but through my art, I aim to tell untold stories of the country’s beauty,” he said.
In addition to offering photography and videography services, Jabe Studios provides training, post-production, and consulting services for individuals and organizations.
Okeagu hopes the studio will inspire other creatives to pursue their passions while building sustainable careers.
He concluded, “Passion drives you to create, but understanding the business ensures your work has value and longevity. Keep learning, and never give up.”
