The Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN) Nigeria has underscored the transformative impact of entrepreneurship as a key driver of economic empowerment across the 19 northern states of Nigeria.
The event, held under the Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) 2024 with the theme: ‘Entrepreneurship is for Everyone’, united entrepreneurs, aspiring change makers, community leaders, and underrepresented groups across the northern region of the country.
Speaking recently at the walk in Kano State, tagged: ‘The Northern Nigeria Entrepreneurship Walk 2024’, the Managing Director of GEN Nigeria, Dr. Olawale Anifowose, stressed the significance of bolstering entrepreneurship in Northern Nigeria.
He highlighted the crucial role that women play in community development, stressing the need for increased capacity-building initiatives for women in the region.
According to him, “The walk emphasised how entrepreneurship can combat economic inequality and empower marginalised communities, with a particular focus on women and underserved populations in Northern Nigeria. It also demonstrated how entrepreneurship offers a sustainable path to financial independence in a challenging economic landscape.
“The Northern Nigeria Entrepreneurship Walk 2024 served as a powerful demonstration of how entrepreneurship can drive positive social and economic change, empowering women and underserved communities while fostering a brighter future for the entire region,” he stated.
At the walk, 10 outstanding female CEOs from the region, who have not only excelled in their fields but have also paved the way for others to follow, were recognised.
For the Founder of Tripoint Academy, Mrs. Shuhda Muhammed, they have witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of poverty on communities, especially its gendered dynamics.
“However, we have also seen the profound change that comes when women are equipped with the skills and knowledge to seize economic opportunities. This is why we are committed to empowering women, enabling them to achieve financial independence and elevate their families out of poverty. Entrepreneurship is a powerful tool to achieve this,” she said. Highlighting the importance of inclusive entrepreneurship, CEO of Deaflywood Film Production, Sani Isyaku, emphasized the need for accessibility, particularly within the Deaf community.
According to him, “Our deaf community in Kano State has immense potential in online businesses and e-commerce. We are eager to collaborate with fellow entrepreneurs to create meaningful opportunities. Inclusion is not just a value but a necessity for sustainable growth.”
