Over the years, his experiences have not only honed his technical skills but also ignited a vision to establish himself as a front-runner in the automation space, particularly in Nigeria, where opportunities for groundbreaking solutions abound.

Every story has a starting point, and his, began with an innate fascination for how things work. As a child, he was captivated by the intricate designs of machines and devices, endlessly curious about the processes behind their functionality. This curiosity laid the foundation for his decision to pursue a degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. The rigorous coursework and hands-on projects at university sharpened his technical acumen and fueled my passion for control systems and automation.

His early years in the field were marked by challenges that tested resolves. In an industry dominated by rapid technological advancements, keeping pace required a commitment to lifelong learning. However, he thrived on challenges, embracing every opportunity to learn, innovate, and grow. Through internships, research projects, and professional engagements, he developed a strong foundation in automation technologies, laying the groundwork for my future career.

The Role of Automation in Nigeria’s Development as Africa’s largest economy, stands at the cusp of a technological revolution.

Industries across the nation are beginning to adopt automation to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and drive innovation. However, the journey towards widespread automation is not without hurdles. From inadequate infrastructure to a scarcity of skilled professionals, the challenges are real, but so are the opportunities.

As a controls engineer, he sees automation as a powerful tool to address some of Nigeria’s most pressing challenges. In manufacturing, for instance, automation can significantly boost production efficiency, reduce waste, and create safer working environments. In agriculture, automated systems can improve crop yields, streamline irrigation, and optimize resource usage. The energy sector, too, stands to benefit immensely from smart grids and automated control systems that ensure efficient energy distribution and minimize losses.

For him, the potential to make a tangible impact on these industries is a driving force. His work is more than a career; it is a mission to contribute to Nigeria’s development by leveraging the power of automation.

Iyalagha‘s journey as a controls engineer has been defined by several pivotal moments—milestones that reflect not only my professional growth but also my commitment to innovation and excellence.

During his tenure at Cummins Inc., he had the privilege of working as a Product Controls
Engineer with the Power Systems Business Unit. His role involved testing and verifying Electronic Control Modules (ECMs) for generators. This experience deepened my understanding of critical systems that power industries and communities. He also gained certifications in Lean Six Sigma, Engine Familiarization, and Battery Storage Systems, enhancing my expertise in optimizing systems for efficiency and reliability.

One of the highlights of his career has been his involvement in creating solutions that
solve real-world problems. For instance, he spearheaded a project to implement smart monitoring systems for industrial equipment, reducing downtime and improving operational efficiency. Projects like these not only tested his technical skills but also taught him the importance of teamwork, problem-solving, and staying ahead of industry trends.

Exploring Sustainability through Automation,
Iyalagha’s passion for sustainability has guided him toward integrating eco-friendly solutions
into my work. He has developed systems that optimize energy use, reduce emissions, and promote greener practices. These projects align with his broader goal of contributing to a more sustainable future—one in which automation plays a key role.

The path to success in the automation space has not been without its share of obstacles. One of the most significant challenges faced is bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Engineering education provides a strong foundation, but the real-world complexities of implementing automation systems require adaptability, resilience, and a willingness to learn from mistakes.

Another challenge has been navigating the unique dynamics of the Nigerian market. While the potential for automation is vast, many industries remain hesitant to adopt new technologies due to cost concerns or lack of technical know-how. Overcoming this requires not only technical expertise but also the ability to communicate the value of automation in clear, compelling terms.
Despite these challenges, the triumphs have been immensely rewarding. Each successful project, each innovation implemented, and each problem solved reinforces his belief in the transformative power of automation. The recognition he has received from peers and industry leaders motivates me to push the boundaries of what is possible.

Looking ahead, my vision is to continue breaking barriers and driving innovation in the automation space. As a controls engineer, he aspires to: Promote Local Talent Development – Nigeria’s engineering sector is brimming with potential, but more needs to be done to nurture local talent. He is committed to mentoring aspiring engineers, sharing his knowledge, and creating opportunities for the next generation of innovators.

Champion Sustainability: Automation and sustainability go hand in hand. By developing systems that are energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, he aim to contribute to Nigeria’s transition toward a greener future.

Drive Industrial Transformation – From manufacturing to agriculture to energy, he want to be at the forefront of industry-wide transformations powered by automation. His goal is to demonstrate that adopting advanced technologies is not just feasible but essential for long-term growth.

And Advocate for Policy Support: Technological advancements require an enabling environment. I hope to collaborate with policymakers and industry stakeholders to create a framework that supports the adoption of automation across various sectors.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of Iyalagha’s journey has been inspiring others to pursue careers in engineering and technology. He believes that representation matters, and seeing someone from a similar background excel can motivate others to dream big. Through public speaking engagements, workshops, and community outreach, he strive to show young Nigerians that a career in automation is not only achievable but also immensely rewarding.

As he reflect on his journey, he said: “I’m filled with gratitude for the mentors, colleagues, and friends who have supported me along the way. Their guidance has been invaluable, and their belief in my potential has propelled me forward. I am also grateful for the challenges, as they have shaped me into the professional I am today. My hope is that it will resonate with readers and inspire them to explore the limitless possibilities of engineering and automation.”

In his conclusion, Iyalagha noted that “the field of automation is more than a profession—it is a passion, a mission, and a journey of constant discovery. As a controls engineer, I am proud to be part of an industry that is shaping the future, solving critical challenges, and transforming lives. My journey is far from over, and I am excited for what lies ahead.

“To my fellow Nigerians and aspiring engineers, I say this: the path may not always be easy, but it is always worth it. Dream big, stay curious, and never stop innovating. Together, we can build a future where technology drives progress, creates opportunities, and leaves a lasting impact on.”
