The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has voiced its concerns over the potential establishment of a foreign military base by France in Nigeria, citing national sovereignty, security, and historical considerations.

At a press briefing, National Coordinator of the group, Com. Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, emphasized that while Nigeria remains open to international cooperation, certain decisions, particularly those involving national security, require thorough public consultation and adherence to constitutional processes.

“We hold our nation’s sovereignty dear and believe that any agreement involving foreign powers, especially those seeking to establish a military presence, must be transparent, consultative, and fully aligned with the best interests of Nigerians,” Charanchi stated.

The group highlighted concerns over reported bilateral agreements that could grant access to Nigeria’s resources, urging a cautious and patriotic approach to foreign partnerships. CNG pointed to recent developments in West Africa, where countries like Mali and Burkina Faso have reassessed their relationships with foreign military powers, advocating for stronger local solutions to regional challenges.

Charanchi stressed that Nigeria’s leadership role in Africa demands prudence in its dealings. “Our country has historically championed the cause of African unity and self-determination. Any decision that affects this legacy must be carefully weighed,” he said.

The group also urged the National Assembly to remain vigilant in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty. “We call on our senators and representatives to ensure that any agreements signed reflect the collective will of Nigerians and prioritize long-term peace, security, and development.”

CNG reiterated its commitment to peaceful dialogue and democratic advocacy, emphasizing that any foreign military presence should be avoided unless there is an overwhelming consensus among Nigerians.

“We trust that our leaders will continue to prioritize the security and prosperity of our nation while maintaining Nigeria’s independence on the global stage,” Charanchi concluded.
