From Nigeria to Canada: Uche Okugo Empowers Communities, Drives Economic Development
Uche Okugo, a distinguished social entrepreneur and founder of the Network of Nigerians in Canada (NNC), is a prominent figure in fostering diversity and inclusion.
Through initiatives that promote economic and leadership development, Okugo has become a beacon of inspiration and progress within the Nigerian and broader African-Canadian communities.
From securing a City of Brampton proclamation for Nigeria’s Democracy Day to organising the Nigeria Independence Day flag-raising at Queen’s Park, his community-driven efforts have been both impactful and transformational.
His leadership roles on the Brampton Mayor’s Black Advisory Council, as past President of the Rotary Club of Brampton and the City of Brampton Toastmasters Club, further illustrate his dedication to community building.
Okugo’s upcoming role as Rotary District 7080 Governor in 2026 underscores his commitment to global collaboration and service.
His passion for economic development stems from his early days in Rotary. Witnessing the impact of global community economic development projects, he envisioned similar initiatives tailored to the Black community.
Through the Network of Nigerians in Canada and his tenure as President of the Rotary Club of Brampton, he expanded strategies to include public and private sector collaborations, developing programmes to support small businesses, hosting information sessions, and creating opportunities for economic growth.
As an Economic Development Practitioner, Okugo sees Brampton as a gateway for businesses seeking to expand into North America, thanks to its strategic location, vibrant demographics, and thriving sectors such as advanced manufacturing, innovation and technology, and food processing.
Recognising the challenges African and Caribbean businesses face entering the North American market, including cultural differences, limited financing, and logistical hurdles, he has dedicated himself to bridging these gaps.
By connecting businesses to grants, funding opportunities, and resources like the Brampton Entrepreneur Centre and provincial programs, he helps them build capacity and establish successful ventures.
“Economic development is not just about numbers; it’s about creating opportunities that empower communities and ensure that businesses can thrive sustainably,” the NNC founder expressed.
Through his leadership and initiatives, he continues to shape Canada-Africa-Caribbean relations. By fostering international partnerships and leveraging trade agreements like AfCFTA, he is paving the way for seamless business integration.
His recognition by MIPAD as one of the 100 Most Influential People in Export and Trade and Preponderant as one of 25 People Shaping Canada-Africa Relations reflects his dedication to advancing economic development.
Okugo is also involved in the William Osler Health System Foundation as Board Director. “Every engagement, every connection, is an opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute to a legacy of unity and progress,” he admitted.
Indeed, Okugo’s journey serves as an inspiration for fostering meaningful relationships and driving impactful change across continents.
