Edo NIPR Hosts Lecture on Governance, Prosperity
The Edo State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has successfully hosted its third monthly public lecture, centred around the theme “Governance & Prosperity in Edo State: Options & Challenges.”
The event brought together key stakeholders, including policymakers, professionals, and community leaders, to engage in a robust discussion on the state’s governance and development challenges, while exploring viable solutions for sustainable growth.
In his opening address, Chairman of the Edo State NIPR, Dr. James-Wisdom Abhulimen, extended congratulations to Senator Monday Okpebholo on his election as the new Executive Governor of Edo State, acknowledging his victory as a reflection of the trust and hope of the people. He wished the governor wisdom, vision, and strong support for transformative leadership.
Abhulimen reiterated the NIPR’s commitment to promoting professional ethics, transparency, and effective governance.
He emphasised the institute’s role in fostering collaboration to enhance socio-economic development in the state, underscoring the importance of good governance as a means to drive prosperity.
The lecture featured a presentation by Prof. Felix Oriakhi of the Federal University, Otuoke, who highlighted several crucial areas for Edo State’s development. Key recommendations from the lecture included:Leadership and Governance: A call for transparent, ethical leadership that prioritises the public good over personal interests, with a focus on combating corruption and alleviating economic hardships.
Education: Urging for urgent upgrades to school infrastructure, the recruitment of qualified educators, and an increased focus on technical education to better equip students with practical skills for the future.
Healthcare: The need for the establishment of accessible, high-quality healthcare centers across communities to improve public health services. Agriculture: Advocating for significant investment in agriculture, including the provision of financial support to farmers and the establishment of silos to ensure food security.
Economic Diversification and Expansion: The adoption of innovative strategies to diversify the economy, enhance revenue streams, and implement e-governance to reduce inefficiencies and curb revenue leakage.
Tourism: Harnessing the state’s tourism potential to drive economic growth and attract investment.
Additionally, the importance of infrastructure development, particularly road networks, and youth empowerment was emphasised as vital for sustaining economic growth and achieving long-term prosperity.
Dr. Abhulimen praised Governor Okpebholo for his proactive approach since taking office and urged the administration to prioritise key areas such as infrastutural development, education, healthcare, agriculture, and economic diversification to promote inclusive growth and improve the standard of living for all Edo citizens.
The event ended with a strong call to action for all stakeholders to collaborate in building a prosperous Edo State where governance and prosperity are not just goals, but attainable realities.
