FROM A HAWKER TO A GOVERNOR 

 Umo Eno is LEADERSHIP Governor of the Year, writes JAMES ADAMS

In recognition of his achievements in the state, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, the fourth civilian governor of Akwa Ibom State, has been honored as the LEADERSHIP Governor of the Year 2024. This recognition underscores his transformational impact on governance, the economic empowerment of his people, and his inspiring personal journey from humble beginnings to political prominence.

Governor Umo Eno’s rise to political prominence is a testament to resilience and divine orchestration. Before venturing into politics, he was best known for his pastoral work as the founder of All Nations Ministry International Church, where he built an impeccable reputation for humility, integrity, and a deep commitment to serving others.

His foray into politics came as a surprise to many, including himself. His political mentor, former Governor Udom Emmanuel, recognized his leadership potential and appointed him Commissioner for Lands. While some doubted his political acumen, Eno quickly demonstrated an ability to navigate complex governance challenges, gaining widespread support and trust.

When Governor Udom Emmanuel announced Eno as his preferred successor, it shocked the political establishment in Akwa-Ibom State. Many had anticipated a more experienced political figure to carry the mantle. Skeptics questioned his readiness, and politically 

motivated accusations were leveled against him, including attempts to frame him as uneducated. However, Eno remained undeterred, leaning on his faith and an unshakeable belief in his vision for Akwa Ibom.

Governor Eno’s humility is deeply rooted in his early life experiences. Growing up in a police barracks, he learned the value of hard work and resilience early. The passing of his father thrust him into the role of a breadwinner for his family. To make ends meet, he hawked soft drinks at Lagos airport while pursuing his education.

During his inauguration on May 29, 2023, Eno recounted these humbling experiences, evoking tears among many attendees.

“If anyone had told me I would become governor, I would have asked the person to see a doctor. Perhaps they were suffering from malaria or hallucinating,” he said with heartfelt emotion.

From those humble beginnings, Eno rose to prominence as a tourism magnate, founding Royalty Hotels, which earned him the nickname “The Governor of Royalty.” His success in the hospitality industry became a stepping stone for his political career, showcasing his ability to manage complex organizations and deliver results.

Governor Eno has anchored his administration on the ARISE Agenda, a comprehensive framework focusing on Agriculture, Rural Development, Infrastructure, Security, and Empowerment. This agenda reflects his commitment to creating a prosperous, inclusive, and self-reliant Akwa Ibom.

He has not disappointed the people. Across all sectors, the governor has been a super performer. In agriculture and food security,

under Eno’s leadership, Akwa Ibom has made significant strides in agriculture, aiming to ensure food security and reduce dependence on external food supplies. By empowering farmers with modern tools and techniques, the state is becoming a hub for agricultural production in Nigeria.

He also prioritized rural development, ensuring that infrastructure projects such as roads, schools, and healthcare facilities reach underserved areas. These efforts are connecting rural communities to urban centers, fostering economic integration, and improving the quality of life for residents.

Infrastructure development remains a cornerstone of Eno’s administration. Roads, power projects, and public utilities are being expanded, making Akwa Ibom more attractive to investors and tourists. This is in line with his vision of transforming the state into an economic powerhouse.

Eno has invested heavily in maintaining peace and security, making Akwa Ibom one of the safest states in Nigeria. His administration’s proactive approach to crime prevention and community engagement has created an environment conducive

 to tourism, investment, and overall development.

Through skill acquisition programs, financial grants, and business-friendly policies, Eno is empowering young people to become self-reliant. His administration is creating jobs, fostering entrepreneurship, and ensuring that the benefits of governance reach every corner of the state.

It is important to state that one of the hallmarks of Eno’s administration is its focus on boosting the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). By leveraging Akwa Ibom’s natural resources, tourism potential, and strategic location, Eno has attracted investors and created new economic opportunities.

The state’s growing reputation as a tourist destination is a testament to his visionary leadership. With improved security, infrastructure, and hospitality services, Akwa Ibom is becoming a preferred destination for both domestic and international tourists.

Despite all the giant strides, Governor Eno’s tenure has not been without challenges. Leading a state governed by an opposition party while navigating Nigeria’s complex political landscape requires exceptional skill and diplomacy. Eno has risen to the occasion, earning respect from national leaders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

One of Eno’s significant achievements is resolving longstanding political feuds that previously denied Akwa Ibom access to federal projects and resources. By fostering collaboration and reducing tension, his administration has attracted investments and federal attention, positioning Akwa Ibom as a vital player on the national stage.
