Author Unveils ‘Power of Nothing’, Bemoans Electoral Injustice

Amid a gathering of political enthusiasts, activists and concerned citizens, Abuja recently witnessed the much-anticipated launch of ‘The Power of Nothing: Triumph and Thump of the People’s Voice in Enugu’.
Authored by Nkem Okuhu, the book delivers a bold exposé of electoral malpractice and injustice during the 2023 elections in Enugu State, sparking renewed conversations about the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic processes.
Okuhu explained that the book was inspired by the determination to preserve the truth and ensure that history is not forgotten.
According to him, the best way to do justice to history is to keep history. “The majority of Enugu people voted in one direction, but the final results painted a different picture one clearly manipulated. This is a glaring injustice, not only to the voters but to democracy itself.”
Okuhu urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other electoral bodies to prioritise fairness and transparency. “Every poor judgment they make affects the common man. Handing over votes to an undeserving candidate undermines the very essence of democracy and disenfranchises the people,” he said.
The chairman of the occasion, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, commended Okuhu for shedding light on the flaws of the 2023 elections and emphasised the importance of documenting such events for posterity.
Represented by Honourable Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, Member representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency, Abaribe, added: “this book highlights the mistakes of the past elections, providing an opportunity to address and rectify them.
“It is essential to document these experiences so future generations can navigate the political landscape with knowledge and understanding.”
Commenting on the historical political imbalance faced by the South East region, he said: “The number of states allocated to the South East compared to other regions has been unjust. However, steps are being taken to address this imbalance, referencing ongoing legislative efforts to create an additional state in the region.”
The Power of Nothing serves as a call to action, urging citizens and leaders to champion electoral integrity and justice.
