The Federal Government has pledged its unwavering support for the Council of Nigerian Mining Engineers and Geoscientists (COMEG) in its efforts to sanitize and regulate Nigeria’s mining sector, citing innovative initiatives aimed at curbing malpractice and ensuring professionalism.
Speaking at the 14th Induction Ceremony of COMEG in Abuja on Thursday, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, highlighted COMEG’s recent strides, including the introduction of the Digital Stamp, launched in March 2022.
The Digital Stamp, embedded with security features, ensures authenticity in the sector and has been instrumental in curbing unwholesome practices.
Alake who was represented by Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Dr. Mary Ogbe commended the Council’s leadership for its role in promoting accountability and professionalism in the Nigerian mining industry. “COMEG has played a crucial role in advancing the objectives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, aimed at transforming and repositioning the mining sector to achieve economic prosperity,” he said.
The Minister, while addressing the 143 newly inducted professionals, urged them to uphold the highest standards of integrity and excellence in their practice. “This induction marks not just a milestone but a call to responsibility. Support the Council by fulfilling your obligations, including timely payment of practicing fees and other dues,” he added.
The Minister assured stakeholders of the Ministry’s continued partnership with COMEG, promising to provide the necessary resources and policy support to strengthen its regulatory mandate. “Together, we can unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s mining sector for the benefit of all,” Alake noted.
The event, attended by dignitaries, prospective inductees, and stakeholders in the mining sector, underscored COMEG’s commitment to professionalism and capacity-building in mining engineering, geosciences, and related fields.
Alake described the ceremony as a celebration of excellence, accountability, and the promise of a brighter future for Nigeria’s mining industry, encouraging the inductees to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s growth.
