After four gruelling months that saw 18 contestants thinking on their feet and whipping up meals under the guidance of resident chef Tolani Tayo-Osikoya (Chef Tee), and food reviewer Opeyemi Famakin, Kate Dickson emerged as the winner at the grand finale recently held at The Zone in Lagos.
Dickson entered a fierce contest with four other contestants — Clara ‘Cla’J’ Ndubuisi, Ahaneku Murphy Tochukwu (Sylvers), Oluwatosin Osinuga (Deversatili) and Adedoyin Adefuye (Striitz), each showcasing their culinary prowess and creativity in a bid to outshine the rest. The competition was intense, with the grand finale pushing the limits of their skill and imagination.
But for Dickson, it was all or nothing as she set her sights on clinching the mouthwatering prize of 10 million, a life-changing reward that promised to turn her culinary dreams into reality.
From bold flavour combinations to intricate plating, the judges faced the challenging task of selecting a winner after prolonged deliberation. Tosin secured second place, while Murphy, the only male finalist, claimed third. Prior to the cook-off, contestants were posed with five questions that helped the audience understand their culinary journey so far and plans for the future.
The event, graced by the Lagos State Commissioner of Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, and Nigerian afrobeats singer 9ice, drew a large audience of food lovers and fans of Chef Tee, Famakin, and host Eniola Adeoluwa.
“‘Street Foodz Naija’ Season 5 has been nothing short of amazing. From the moment we made the announcement in Alausa Ikeja in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Social Development to date,” said the show’s creator, Femi Ogundoro. “It’s been fantastic in terms of our strategy, in terms of awareness, in terms of reach, in terms of enriching lives, it’s been more than what we imagine.
“We trained these people and put them in check as to what to expect on the show. And then they proceeded to the pitch. After the pitch, we were able to get the contestants to start the show. What is different in this season is the fact that these contestants have now been able to find their feet on the show to become confident about what they are doing on the platform. These guys now have clear understanding and direction as to what can be done, what they should be doing with themselves,” Ogundoro concluded.
