Police Probe Mysterious Death of Suspect in Detention in Kwara

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, yesterday in Ilorin directed the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID) to immediately take over the investigation into the  death of  Mr. Jimoh Abdulqaudri, who passed away while in police detention in Ilorin, Kwara State, over the weekend.

The deceased was said to have been detained at the State Criminal Investigation Bureau when the incident happened.

The family of the deceased and the Erubu/Asunnara community where he hailed from have been calling for urgent investigation into his death.

To this end, the IGP yesterday visited the residence of the deceased in Ilorin  where he met with the bereaved family. The IGP was received by the Balogun Fulani of Ilorin, Alhaji Sadiq Atiku Fulani, who spoke on behalf of the family. 

Speaking at the meeting,  the IGP expressed his condolences and assured the family that no stone would be left unturned in uncovering the circumstances that led to the tragic incident, before ordering the FCID to handle the case with utmost diligence and ensure a conclusive and impartial investigation. 

He further reassured the family and the general public that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to upholding the highest standards of accountability, professionalism, and respect for human rights.

While reiterating the Force’s zero-tolerance stance on unprofessional conduct among its personnel, the IGP called on all stakeholders to remain calm and allow the due process of law to prevail.

Meanwhile, the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari has sympathised with the family of the deceased.

A statement issued in Ilorin by the Emir’s spokesman, Alhaji Abdulazeez, said the emir expressed sadness over the demise of Abdulqodir in police custody on Saturday.

He said: “This is a rude shock and regrettable incident, seeing a promising young man die in such an inhumane situation”.

Sulu-Gambari commiserated with the family members, friends and associates of the deceased, urging Egbetokun to  probe into the circumstance that led to the demise of the deceased.

The Emir also advised authorities of relevant security agencies to ensure strict enforcement of professionalism and compliance to global ethical practices in their daily conducts with members of the society.
