The Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation, Civil Service, Technical, and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE) of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Abuja, has called on the federal government to reinstate the sales of subsidised rice to civil servants.

The call was made by the Chairman of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources unit, Mr. Oladipo Agboola, who said that the sales of subsidised rice have been on hold since the third batch release of the list for beneficiary Ministry, Department and Agencies (MDAs).

This initiative, according to him, would provide much-needed relief to civil servants and enhance their access to food supplies, especially during these challenging economic times.

He also appealed to the government to find ways of extending the initiative to the general public, as this gesture is seen as impactful.

The AUPCTRE also distributed welfare packages to its members to mark the 2024 Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Agboola, at the launch of the welfare initiative, emphasised the union’s commitment to the well-being of its members, which is in tandem with Pillar 6 (staff welfare) of the FCCSIP 2021-2025.

He said: “This distribution of rice and vegetable oil is part of our ongoing efforts to support the ministry’s management welfare programmes and our members, a tradition we have upheld for the past six years during festive periods like Easter, Ramadan, and Sallah.”

He further reiterated the significance of this gesture, particularly amidst the current economic climate. “Considering the high food inflation and reduced purchasing power of our members, we continuously seek ways to alleviate their financial pressure by providing welfare support.

“We believe these welfare packages will provide some relief and make the holiday season more enjoyable for our colleagues,” he added.

AUPCTRE’s actions demonstrated the importance of collective welfare and proactive governance.

In addition, the union’s sustained commitment to its members and its advocacy for progressive policies highlight the vital role the civil service in shaping a fairer and more resilient Nigeria.
