The Governor of Sokoto State, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu, has urged corps members posted to Sokoto State to promote national unity and integration.
Governor Aliyu stated this, yesterday, during the swearing-in ceremony of 2024 Batch C stream II, at Wamakko Permanent Orientation Camp, Sokoto State.
Represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Muhammad, Aliyu warned the corps members to shun social vices such as cultism, drug abuse and misconduct.
The governor congratulated the corps members on the completion of their academic programmes which he said qualified them for mobilisation.
“I commend you for your prompt response to the clarion call to serve our fatherland. No doubt, history will be kind to you for your patriotic zeal,” he stated.
The governor expressed deep appreciation to the management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for its critical role in the moulding and mentoring of the youth to key into the laudable programmes and policies of government over the years, which has helped to fast-track the growth and development of the country in all spheres of human endeavour.
“I sincerely welcome you to Sokoto State, the Seat of Caliphate, I want you to consider your deployment to the state as the will of God.
“I must admit that the three weeks period of the orientation exercise demanded your strength, discipline, tolerance and some level of sacrifice. But rest assured that all of these will individually and collectively form the foundation upon which your tomorrow will be built.
“There is no gainsaying the fact that the NYSC’s scheme has proved to be a major unifying factor amongst our youths from different ethnic, religious and academic backgrounds.
“The scheme has also imparted in the youth a tradition of industry, hard work, patriotism and loyalty in service. This is evident in the activities of corps members that have positively affected the socio-economic development of the country through community efforts.
“It is worthy to mention that the relevance of the NYSC’s scheme in today’s Nigeria is undisputedly and positively overwhelming; hence, you have a challenge of sustaining the noble role of the scheme in nation building.”
He also assured them of his administration’s commitment to the security of corps members in any part of the state with a directive to all security agencies and community leaders not to rest on their oars in ensuring that conducive environment is created for them to live and work in line with the agenda of his administration to improve human capacity of all and sundry to effectively contribute to the peace and development of the state.
Aliyu noted that his administration’s youth policy is geared towards harnessing the creative talents and ingenuity of a large youthful population by empowering them through skill acquisition training to contribute to the economic development of the state.
Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator, Alhaji Yakubu Yaro Usman, implored the corps members to be disciplined stressing camp exercise is regimented.
He explained that the orientation exercise would prepare them physically and mentally for their expected contributions to the progress and development of the country.
He reminded them that camp life is highly regimented, not designed to make them comfortable saying it is rather designed to expose them to the culture and traditions of their host communities.
Usman further disclosed that white-collar jobs are not easy to go by now hence a need to embrace the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme of the scheme.
“I’m happy to inform you that many of your predecessors, who embraced vocational and entrepreneurial training of the SAED platform are now successful owners of business and employers of labour,” he added.
He, however, thanked Governor Aliyu and Sultan of Sokoto, Dr. Muhammad Sa ‘ad ‘Abubakar 111 for their unalloyed support to the scheme.
The Chief Judge of Sokoto State, Justice Muhammad Sa a’idu Sifawa, administered an oath of allegiance on the corps members.
