GirlLearn Africa Launches New Initiative to Bridge Tech Gender Gap

Mary Nnah
In a bid to increase female representation in Africa’s tech industry, GirlLearn Africa has launched three new courses in Email Marketing, Virtual Assistance, and Graphic Design. This initiative aims to provide women with practical, high-demand skills to succeed in the digital economy.
Women remain underrepresented in Africa’s tech industry, holding just 30% of tech roles. Barriers such as limited access to technology, financial constraints, and societal norms continue to hinder their entry and growth in the sector. GirlLearn Africa is tackling these challenges head-on by providing hands-on tech training, mentorship, and resources designed to equip women, especially those with disabilities, with market-ready digital skills.
“Our goal is to make digital education accessible to all African women, regardless of background or physical ability”, Founder of GirlLearn Africa, Ajiri Okoribe, told THISDAY recently.
“Tech isn’t just for men, and success isn’t just for a select few. We’re committed to bridging the gender gap in tech and unlocking the full potential of African women”, she added.
The new courses are designed to help women build skills that translate into real jobs, freelance opportunities, and thriving businesses.
“We are creating a pipeline of skilled African women who can compete globally in tech and digital careers. Our focus is on equipping women with skills that are not only relevant but also profitable”, said Head of Marketing at GirlLearn Africa, Cherry Oha.
“We are not just teaching skills; we are changing lives,” added Temilola Otunla, Head of Partnerships at GirlLearn Africa. “With the right skills and support, more African women will break barriers, build wealth, and lead in tech.”
GirlLearn Africa’s approach goes beyond technical training to career success coaching. Participants receive training in personal branding, leadership, communication, negotiation, and critical thinking skills. This holistic approach empowers women to stand out, attract career opportunities, and grow in their roles.
Since its inception, GirlLearn Africa has made significant strides. Over 1,000 women have benefited from its free and paid digital programs. The organization has secured seed funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and partnered with CCHub to support digital literacy for women with disabilities.
GirlLearn Africa continues to build a thriving community of over 500 African women through mentorship and career development initiatives. The organisation invites young women, partners, and organisations to join its mission to create a more inclusive tech industry.
GirlLearn Africa is a non-profit organisation dedicated to bridging the gender gap in Africa’s tech industry through digital education and skills training.
