On how Dimeji Eyiowuawi birthed the phenomenon he details that, “One day in 2012, while I was eating plain rice with beef sauce and fried plantain in my friend’s room and watching Wiz Khalifa’s Day To Day Videos on YouTube, I blurted out “Dodo Gang”. In that moment, there was honestly no thought to it, like I said, I just blurted it out. It was catchy and my friends instantly reacted positively and laughed to it. Observing their reactions in the moments that followed, I knew I had something there that I wanted to own. Because at that point in time, I had come up with concepts for people or just gave them ideas that I helped developed and were successful, but I didn’t own any of them.”
Food and Fashion are vital parts of every culture so also are events necessary to celebrate the said culture. You can identify a group of people or culture by the food they eat and the way they dress. Food and Clothing are also 2 of the 3 basic humans needs for survival which is why Dimeji curated the plantain lifestyle into food, fashion and events. He expresses further that, “I feel like food and fashion are amazing ways to connect with people of all cultures. They are great ways to find similarities in the same things that differentiate us. For instance, I had an Eritrean friend in University that had never eaten plantain before, he was telling me about how he would have eaten it like a banana if it was given to him. So, I fried it for him, and he absolutely loved it. That event is now a core memory for our friendship and something we bond over. He never had rice without plantain again from that day and I’m actually very jealous of him because he can trace the first time he ate plantains while I can’t. I also genuinely enjoy eating for pleasure, not just for survival and I also genuinely enjoy curating cool unique experiences for cool people to come enjoy, explore and connect with other cool people too. In our community, there are so many amazing stories of connections and bonds that were formed at Dodo Gang events. Meeting a fellow plantain lover is like finally meeting a distant relative you’ve heard great stories about.“
Dodo Gang’s next event, the Plantain People’s Party (PPP), is set to take place on March 2nd at the British Council, Ikoyi, Lagos, from 2:00 PM. This exciting gathering will bring together plantain lovers for a unique experience featuring plantain dishes, cocktails, games, live performances, merchandise, and a live mural painting. Proudly supported by the British Council, PPP promises to be a vibrant celebration of The Plantain Lifestyle.
On what should be expected of their March 2025 event, Dimeji discloses that, “World Plantain Day 2025 is in June, so the plan for Plantain People’s Party on March 2nd is to set the stage for World Plantain Day 2025. With every Dodo Gang event, it’s always the best vibes. But with this one, it’s even better because thankfully we are armed with the very intentional support of the British Council.
